History
The Dead Sea has long been recognized as a concentrated source of salts and other minerals, but industrial potash production developed comparatively recently. Early twentieth-century efforts associated with Moshe Novomeysky established potash and bromine facilities in the region during the 1920s and 1930s. One facility was destroyed during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, while another ceased production, bringing that phase of development to an end. In 1956, Jordan established the Arab Potash Company with support from several Arab countries. The venture was designed as a pan-Arab industrial project to exploit the Dead Sea's potash and mineral resources. The Jordanian government granted APC exclusive rights over Dead Sea mineral extraction, production and marketing under a concession extending from 1958 to 2058.
