Overview
Akita Aqula Beer is a small craft brewery located in the near-central part of Akita City, Japan. It entered the beer business after the 1994 revision of Japan's Liquor Tax Act permitted small-scale brewing, and was founded in 1997, making it part of the first generation of Japanese craft brewers and the second-oldest brewery in Akita. The brewery occupies a site that was a sake brewery before the war, and the name 'Akura' derives from the word for a sake storehouse (kura). Its brewing follows German techniques studied by the then-president in Munich, and all its beers use Akita-grown hops and ingredients such as Akita rice. In July 2022 the beer brewing business (Akita Aqula Beer) and the restaurant business were transferred from Akura Co., Ltd. to Akita Northern Happinets Co., Ltd.

It decided to enter the beer business when the 1994 revision of the Liquor Tax Act permitted small-scale brewing (the lifting of the ban on local beer), and was founded in 1997. It belongs to the first generation of Japan's craft beer industry and is the second-oldest brewery in Akita. In July 2022, the beer brewing business (Akita Aqula Beer) and the restaurant business (Beer Cafe Akura) were transferred from Akura Co., Ltd. to Akita Northern Happinets Co., Ltd. In May 2023, 'Beer Cafe Akura' was renewed as 'Beer Bar Akura'.
