Overview
Aqilion AB (publ) is a Swedish public limited company with headquarters in Helsingborg and an affiliate office at Medicon Village in Lund, Sweden. The company focuses on diseases caused by chronic inflammation and dysfunctional immunological reactions, exploring novel scientific findings and developing new innovative treatments. It runs four innovative R&D programs aimed at chronic inflammatory diseases for which few or no treatments are available. Aqilion seeks to demonstrate the clinical and commercial potential of medical innovations to attract industrial partners and buyers who can continue clinical development.
History
In 2019, the company name was changed to AQILION AB, and the pipeline strengthened with two preclinical programs in inflammation, Alhena and Alnitak; Aqilion also received SEK 100 million through conversion of outstanding warrants. In 2020, Aqilion initiated the Polaris program aiming at developing first-in-class compounds to prevent harmful effects of chronic inflammation, became a public limited company, moved its headquarters to new premises in Helsingborg, and opened an affiliate office at Medicon Village in Lund. In 2021, Aqilion acquired a phase-1 ready anti-inflammatory program, now Regulus, from LEO Pharma; the Alnitak program expanded by the Alnitak CNS project; and the early oncology research project Alhena closed. In 2022, Aqilion reinforced its position as a biotech company with the drug candidate AQ312 for chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), and in August started a Phase 1 safety study with AQ280 (Regulus program) in healthy volunteers. In 2023, Aqilion announced a pre-clinical licensing and strategic research collaboration with Merck in February, successfully completed the ARIA-1 Phase 1 study with AQ280 in August, and reported positive results from the ARIA-1 Phase 1 study in October. In 2024, Aqilion nominated a new project with the kinase PKCtheta as a drug target in May, and in June regained the rights to the TAK1 program from Merck.
