History
Apptio was established in Bellevue, Washington, in 2007 by Sunny Gupta, Kurt Shintaffer, and Paul McLachlan. Gupta and Shintaffer had previously worked at iConclude before that company was acquired by Opsware. Apptio began in stealth mode and received $7 million from Madrona Venture Group and Greylock Partners in November 2007. Its early purpose was to make enterprise technology spending more understandable and manageable by connecting IT resources and costs with services, budgets, and business priorities. The company raised a further $14 million from Andreessen Horowitz in 2009, its first investment by that newly formed venture firm. Additional financing followed as Apptio expanded its product and commercial operations: a $16.5 million Series C round led by Shasta Ventures in 2010, a $50 million Series D round in 2012, and a $45 million Series E round in 2013. These rounds supported hiring, product development, and international growth. Apptio expanded beyond the United States during the middle of the 2010s, opening offices in Sydney and Melbourne in 2014, adding a Denver location in 2015, and announcing a Paris office in 2016. The company completed its initial public offering on September 23, 2016, raising $96 million and listing on Nasdaq under the symbol APTI. As a public company, it continued to promote technology business management software for planning, budgeting, forecasting, service costing, and executive reporting. Acquisitions broadened Apptio’s scope. In February 2018, it completed the purchase of Digital Fuel SV, a provider of IT business management tools, for a reported $42.5 million. Later that year, Vista Equity Partners agreed to acquire Apptio in a transaction announced at approximately $1.9 billion. The deal offered Apptio shareholders $38 per share and returned the company to private ownership. In 2019, Apptio acquired Cloudability, adding a specialized cloud expenditure management business. This move reflected the shift of enterprise technology spending from traditional data centers toward public, hybrid, and multicloud environments. Apptio also opened its first India office that year. In 2020, it collaborated with LeanIX on technology spending data analytics. Apptio acquired Targetprocess in February 2021. Targetprocess brought agile planning and product portfolio management capabilities, allowing Apptio to address not only the financial dimensions of technology but also the prioritization and visualization of technology work and investment. In April 2021, Apptio announced a redesigned product portfolio centered on ApptioOne, Targetprocess, and Cloudability. It subsequently announced a certified ServiceNow integration, opened a Krakow office, and collaborated with Microsoft on deploying its platform through Microsoft Cloud for workload migration and optimization. Apptio also partnered with IBM in 2021 on enterprise transformation and hybrid-cloud initiatives. IBM agreed in June 2023 to acquire Apptio from Vista Equity Partners for $4.6 billion in cash. IBM completed the acquisition on August 10, 2023. Apptio thereby became part of IBM Software, where its technology financial management, cloud cost management, and technology portfolio capabilities complement IBM’s hybrid-cloud, automation, artificial-intelligence, and IT-operations products. The brand remains associated with enterprise technology cost transparency and investment management, but it is no longer an independent publicly listed company.
