Overview
AppNexus was an American advertising-technology company whose cloud-based software supported automated buying, selling, delivery, and optimization of digital advertising. Founded in 2007 by former Right Media employees Brian O'Kelley and Mike Nolet, the company emerged during the transition from manually negotiated online media purchases to software-mediated programmatic advertising and real-time bidding. Michael Rubenstein, formerly a Google DoubleClick executive, joined as president in 2009. The company developed infrastructure for multiple sides of the digital advertising market. Its technology included an advertising exchange, demand-side platform capabilities for advertisers and agencies, supply-side platform capabilities for publishers, ad-serving functions, data-management tools, campaign optimization, financial clearing, and support for directly negotiated campaigns. The platform was intended to connect advertisers, agencies, publishers, ad networks, and other aggregators while automating decisions about inventory, bids, targeting, delivery, and yield management. It integrated with external advertising sources and exchanges, including Google's Authorized Buyers marketplace, Magnite, PubMatic, and other intermediaries. AppNexus operated internationally, with offices across North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and used multiple data centers, including infrastructure in Amsterdam serving European and Middle Eastern activity. Its expansion reflected the growing importance of independent ad-tech infrastructure to publishers and buyers seeking alternatives to vertically integrated advertising platforms. The company raised substantial private financing from investors including Microsoft, Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, Venrock, Kodiak Venture Partners, Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and Ron Conway. By 2015, reported cumulative financing had reached approximately $250 million, although AppNexus remained privately held. Brian O'Kelley stepped down as chief executive in October 2018. AT&T announced in June 2018 that it would acquire AppNexus and place it within AT&T's Xandr advertising division. The acquisition gave AT&T additional programmatic advertising, publisher monetization, data, and campaign technology as it sought to build an advertising business connected to its media and telecommunications assets. AppNexus subsequently operated within the Xandr organization rather than as an independent company. In October 2019, Xandr acquired Clypd, a company focused on programmatic buying for linear television, extending the broader group's advertising capabilities beyond online display and video. In December 2021, AT&T announced an agreement to sell Xandr to Microsoft, subject to regulatory review and other closing conditions. Following the corporate integration of its technology and operations into Xandr and later Microsoft's advertising organization, AppNexus ceased operating as an independent brand.
History
AppNexus was established in the United States in 2007 by Brian O'Kelley and Mike Nolet, both of whom had previously worked at Right Media. The company was created as digital advertising was moving toward real-time bidding, automated media buying, and software-based management of advertising inventory. Michael Rubenstein, a former Google DoubleClick vice president and general manager, joined the company as president in September 2009. AppNexus built a cloud-based platform intended to provide core infrastructure for the programmatic advertising market. Rather than operating only as a media buyer or publisher, it supplied technology to several sides of the market: demand-side functionality for advertisers and agencies, supply-side functionality for publishers, exchange and auction infrastructure, ad-serving tools, data management, optimization, financial clearing, and support for directly negotiated campaigns. This broad architecture allowed market participants to automate bidding, inventory selection, campaign delivery, audience and data operations, and publisher monetization. The company developed an international presence as programmatic advertising expanded. It maintained offices in North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and operated through multiple data centers. Its Amsterdam infrastructure served activity in Europe and the Middle East. The platform also connected with external advertising sources and exchanges, including Google's Authorized Buyers exchange, Magnite, PubMatic, and other aggregators. AppNexus was backed by a group of institutional and technology investors that included Microsoft, Khosla Ventures, First Round Capital, Venrock, and Kodiak Venture Partners, as well as individual investors such as Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz, and Ron Conway. By 2015, the company had reportedly raised about $250 million in private financing. It remained a private company rather than becoming publicly listed. O'Kelley left the chief executive position in October 2018. In June 2018, AT&T announced that it would acquire AppNexus and place it under Xandr, AT&T's advertising and analytics division. The transaction was part of AT&T's effort to build a technology-supported advertising business connected to its telecommunications, media, and data assets. After the acquisition, AppNexus's products and personnel were incorporated into Xandr, and the AppNexus name became less prominent as the business was reorganized under the parent advertising brand. Xandr continued expanding its advertising capabilities after the AppNexus transaction. In October 2019, it acquired Clypd, whose technology supported programmatic purchasing of linear television advertising. This extended the combined advertising strategy into television as well as digital media. In December 2021, AT&T announced an agreement to sell Xandr to Microsoft for an undisclosed price, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory reviews. AppNexus no longer functions as an independent company or standalone operating brand; its technology and organizational legacy are associated with the Xandr advertising business and its subsequent ownership.
