Overview

Apple Vacations is an American tour operator brand that pioneered packaged vacation travel from the United States to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the Caribbean. Founded in 1969 by John Mullen and his brother-in-law Al Atkinson as Atkinson & Mullen Travel, the company was later renamed Apple Vacations after Mullen became sole proprietor. For decades it has been a leading seller of charter flights and all-inclusive resort packages, helping to popularize destinations such as Cancún and Punta Cana among U.S. leisure travelers. In the 2010s, Apple Vacations became a core brand within Apple Leisure Group (ALG), a travel and hospitality conglomerate that also owned resort brand manager AMResorts, online travel agency CheapCaribbean.com, destination management company Amstar DMC, and other tour operators. ALG was backed by private equity firms including Bain Capital, KKR, and KSL Capital Partners before being acquired by Hyatt Hotels Corporation in 2021 for $2.7 billion. Following the acquisition, the ALG name was retired and its tour operator subsidiaries, including Apple Vacations, were organized under the ALG Vacations (ALGV) umbrella within Hyatt's Distribution Segment. Today, Apple Vacations operates as one of several vacation brands in the ALGV portfolio, alongside Travel Impressions, CheapCaribbean.com, Funjet Vacations, Blue Sky Tours, BeachBound, and United Vacations. It continues to focus on leisure travel to warm-weather destinations, offering air-inclusive packages, hotel bookings, and destination services. The brand is sold primarily through travel agents and direct-to-consumer channels in the United States.

History

Apple Vacations was founded in 1969 by John Mullen and his brother-in-law Al Atkinson as Atkinson & Mullen Travel. Mullen later became the sole proprietor and renamed the company Apple Vacations. The company grew as a tour operator specializing in charter flights and packaged vacations to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the Caribbean, becoming one of the largest sellers of charter flights from the United States to those regions. In 2001, Alejandro Zozaya, John Mullen's son-in-law, founded AMResorts, a resort sales, marketing, and brand management company. Over a decade later, Zozaya spearheaded the formation of Apple Leisure Group (ALG) by making Apple Vacations a sister company to AMResorts. In late 2012, ALG sold an undisclosed stake to Boston-based private equity firm Bain Capital. In 2013, ALG expanded through the acquisition of Travel Impressions from American Express, CheapCaribbean.com, Amstar DMC, and the Unlimited Vacation Club loyalty program. In early 2017, Bain Capital sold its interest in ALG to KSL Capital Partners and KKR. In May 2018, ALG merged with The Mark Travel Corporation, adding brands such as Funjet Vacations and Trisept Solutions. In November 2018, ALG announced European expansion with Grupo Inversor Hesperia (GIHSA), taking over four resorts in Spain, and the following month agreed to acquire a majority stake in Alua Hotels and Resorts. In 2019, ALG named Alejandro Reynal as CEO, succeeding Alejandro Zozaya, and continued to expand its resort portfolio. In August 2021, Hyatt Hotels Corporation announced it would acquire Apple Leisure Group for $2.7 billion in cash. The deal closed on November 2, 2021. The ALG name was retired, and its tour operator subsidiaries, including Apple Vacations, were placed under the ALG Vacations (ALGV) umbrella within Hyatt's Distribution Segment. Apple Vacations continues to operate as a vacation brand within ALGV, alongside Travel Impressions, CheapCaribbean.com, Funjet Vacations, Blue Sky Tours, BeachBound, and United Vacations.
