Overview
Apiario Editora is an independent Spanish publishing house based in A Coruña, Galicia, dedicated to contemporary Galician-language literature. It was founded in 2014 by the writers Antía Otero (A Estrada, 1982) and Dores Tembrás (Bergondo, 1979). The name Apiario — Galician for 'apiary', a group of beehives — expresses the artisanal and communal character of the firm's contribution to publishing. The house describes itself as a literary project that weaves together writing workshops and training courses with an independent publishing imprint, and its website presents it as 'a community where the word is the centre of the hexagon'. Apiario publishes books in which, in its own words, no two are alike: each title is treated as an opportunity for a unique design responding to the needs of the text, with attention to paper, binding, typography, illustration and printing. The publisher works without a distributor, taking its books directly to points of sale and also selling through its own online shop. Its catalogue is organised into named collections that echo the apiary metaphor: Cera Labrada (poetry in Galician), Niño de Abella (children's literature), Abella Mestra (essay and popularisation), Pan de Abella (poetry plaquettes) and Chuchamel, alongside the Filomena Dato collection. The house also runs the Apiario courses — continuous training in small groups, both in-person and online — and produces booktrailers and other digital content around its authors. Among the works published by Apiario are celebrated titles of recent Galician poetry, including Gonzalo Hermo's Celebración (2014), winner of the Premio da Crítica, María do Cebreiro's O deserto (2015), Ismael Ramos's Lumes (2017) and Lucía Aldao's Todo isto antes era noite (2018). In 2017, at the third Gala do Libro Galego, Lumes was awarded the prize for best-edited book of the year. The house has also published the anthology No seu despregar (2016), gathering eighteen poets born between 1985 and 1997, and children's albums such as María Lado's Porque Cuqui non quere ir a lavadora (2014) and Estíbaliz Espinosa's Caer de cu polo universo. Apiario remains a small, independent, privately owned publisher led by its two founders, with a clearly literary and regional focus on Galician letters and a strong emphasis on the material craft of bookmaking.
History
Apiario Editora was founded in 2014 in A Coruña by the writers Antía Otero and Dores Tembrás as an independent publishing house devoted to contemporary Galician literature. The name Apiario — 'apiary', a group of beehives — was chosen to convey the artisanal and communal nature of the project, and it also inspired the names of the house's collections. The first collections appeared in 2014: Cera Labrada, dedicated to poetry in Galician, and Niño de Abella, for children's literature, launched with María Lado's Porque Cuqui non quere ir a lavadora, illustrated by Yanina Torres Tuirán. Cera Labrada quickly became associated with some of the most appreciated works of recent Galician poetry, including Gonzalo Hermo's Celebración (2014), which won the Premio da Crítica, María do Cebreiro's O deserto (2015), Ismael Ramos's Lumes (2017) and Lucía Aldao's Todo isto antes era noite (2018). In 2015 the essay and popularisation collection Abella Mestra began with the collective volume Poesía hexágono. Ollada et experiencia. Proposta e resposta nas aulas, on the didactics of literature. The following year, 2016, saw the launch of the Pan de Abella collection of poetry plaquettes, inaugurated by Dores Tembrás's Auga a través, and the publication of No seu despregar, an anthology bringing together verses by eighteen poets born between 1985 and 1997, expressing the house's desire to promote young Galician poetry. The children's album Caer de cu polo universo by the poet and scientist Estíbaliz Espinosa also met with considerable success. A landmark moment came in 2017, when at the third Gala do Livro Galego — organised jointly by the Federation of Bookshops of Galicia, the Galician Association of Publishers and the Association of Writers in the Galician Language — a work published by Apiario received the prize for best-edited book of the year: the poetry volume Lumes by Ismael Ramos. This recognition underlined the house's commitment to the craft of bookmaking, including paper selection, binding, typography and illustration. Apiario has continued to operate as a small independent publisher led by its two founders, combining its editorial catalogue with the Apiario courses — continuous training in small groups, held from October to June, in person and online — and with activities such as the Doutras bocas poetry reading club and the Filomena Dato poetry prize associated with the Concello de Bergondo. The house works without a distributor, bringing its books directly to points of sale and selling through its own online shop, and it maintains a strong presence in Galician literary life through booktrailers, events and its named collections.
