Overview
APA-OTS (often shortened to OTS, for Originaltext-Service) is the press-release distribution platform operated by APA – Austria Presse Agentur eG, the largest national news and press agency in Austria, headquartered in Vienna. Through the ots.at portal, organizations — political parties, companies, associations, public bodies and PR agencies — publish their own announcements in text, image, audio and video form, which are then made available to Austrian newsrooms and the public. The service is one of the agency's core commercial pillars alongside its editorial news wire, financial services, image agency (APA-Images) and communications subsidiary (APA-Comm). The platform presents itself as a searchable archive of Austrian press releases, advertising that users can search "over 1.5 million Aussendungen" (press releases) and offering an AI-assisted search function. Its homepage organizes content by category — politics, business, finance, chronicle, culture, media, careers, tourism and the federal provinces — and lists current images, videos and events. Releases carry a timestamp and an OTS reference number, and are attributed to the issuing organization, as seen in the political and regional items featured on the site. APA-OTS is not a separate company but a service brand within the APA group. The parent cooperative is owned by Austrian daily newspapers and the public broadcaster ORF, making APA one of roughly twenty news agencies worldwide in purely private hands. The OTS service itself grew out of the agency's "Belangsendungen" (paid announcement) business, which became a second revenue stream and helped the agency return to profitability from 1988 onward under then-managing director Wolfgang Vyslozil. Today APA-OTS functions as a central infrastructure for Austrian public communication: it is used by parties across the political spectrum, by federal and provincial institutions, and by businesses and associations to reach media directly. Its archive and search tools make it a reference source for journalists, PR professionals and researchers tracking Austrian public statements.
History
APA-OTS is a service brand of APA – Austria Presse Agentur eG, whose institutional lineage reaches back to the Österreichische Correspondenz founded in Vienna on 10 October 1849 by Joseph Tuvora. That agency was nationalized in 1859 as the k.k. Telegraphen-Korrespondenz-Bureau and, after the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, was absorbed into the k.u.k. Kriegspressequartier — described as the world's first state news agency. It worked internationally through exchange agreements with Reuters and Agence Havas. After the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the agency was reorganized and reduced to a small national agency. From 1919 to 1926 it was led by Josef C. Wirth, who as a member of the Austrian peace delegation in St. Germain negotiated the resumption of relations with Reuters and Havas. In 1922 it was renamed Amtliche Nachrichtenstelle (ANA) and placed under the Bundespressedienst; it remained state-run and served as a government mouthpiece, disseminating Austrofascist ideas from 1933. In 1938 it was replaced by the Nazi German News Office (Deutsches Nachrichtenbüro); Jewish staff and supporters of the Ständestaat were dismissed and some deported, while remaining employees had to swear loyalty to Adolf Hitler. In 1945 the agency was again called ANA and was state-owned — but only for a year. As early as 1942 the globally influential agencies Associated Press and Reuters had decided not to conclude contracts with state agencies. The ANA was therefore privatized: in 1946 Austrian daily newspapers joined together and replaced it with the state-independent cooperative "Austria Presse Agentur" (APA). Because until the 1950s most newspapers were published by one of the two major parties, ÖVP and SPÖ, the APA remained under direct political influence, and personnel decisions followed the Proporz principle until the late 1960s. In 1963 ORF became a co-owner. Only in the 1970s, as efforts began to remove ORF from party control and party newspapers declined, could the APA emancipate itself from politics. Crucial to this was the second revenue pillar of "Belangsendungen" — today's OTS — which gave the agency a new income source. After more than four decades of economic struggle, then-managing director Wolfgang Vyslozil led the APA out of the red. From 1988 the APA operated profitably and from 1993 paid annual dividends to its owners. With the convergence model introduced by Vyslozil, the APA positioned itself as the world's only news agency supplying customers with real-time and database services. Apart from the Kronen Zeitung and the free newspaper Heute, all Austrian daily newspapers are cooperators of the APA; nearly all professional media and numerous businesses, associations and the Republic of Austria itself are customers of the news service. In 2018, with the merger of the Swiss news agency sda and the picture agency Keystone, the APA became the largest shareholder and strategic technology partner of the new KEYSTONE-SDA-ATS AG, contributing its previous 50% stake in Keystone in exchange for a 30% share. Today the APA group consists of the cooperative news agency and two wholly owned subsidiaries, active in news agency, information and communication management, and information technology. The OTS platform continues as the group's original-text distribution channel, now offering text, image, audio and video releases, a searchable archive of more than 1.5 million releases, and AI-assisted search.
