Overview
AOC media, whose name is the acronym of Analyse Opinion Critique, is a French online daily newspaper of ideas launched on 25 January 2018. It was conceived by journalists but is written by researchers, writers, intellectuals, artists and journalists, with the stated ambition of restoring a degree of verticality and authority to a public sphere it considers fragmented and horizontalised. The publication is accessible only by subscription and follows a micro-media funding model. The editorial formula is highly structured: from Monday to Friday AOC publishes three articles per day — an Analyse, an Opinion and a Critique. On Saturday it publishes a major interview of ideas or of a biographical trajectory, and on Sunday an unpublished literary text. The title is directed by Sylvain Bourmeau, a producer at France Culture and associate professor at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, who previously took part in the launch of Politix, Les Inrockuptibles and Mediapart. The editorial team has included associated editors such as Océane Ragoucy, Jean-Marie Durand, Julie Gacon and Benjamin Tainturier, and Cécile Moscovitz as secrétaire générale de la rédaction. Beyond its daily online output, AOC has developed print extensions. It launched the collection "Cahier" co-published with éditions La Découverte, and in December 2020 launched "Les Imprimés d'AOC", a series intended to give a second life to reference articles in the spirit of eighteenth-century brochures. In late March 2025 it launched a paper version of the media; at that point the site counted 6,000 published articles signed by 2,700 authors. In March 2025 it also compiled around twenty reflections by philosophers, political scientists and sociologists on artificial intelligence into a quarterly paper review, opening with two editorials placed side by side, one written by ChatGPT and the other by co-founder Sylvain Bourmeau. AOC is also known for its engagement in media-policy debates: in February 2022 it took part in the creation of the Stop Bolloré collective against the concentration of media and publishing. In February 2026 a controversy pitted director Sylvain Bourmeau against the review Le Grand Continent, which accused him of repeated attacks with a conspiratorial tone; the episode was analysed by Libération as revealing tensions in the competitive market of online intellectual reviews.
History
AOC (Analyse Opinion Critique) was launched on 25 January 2018 on the occasion of La Nuit des idées. Its creation was supported by a crowdfunding campaign backed by several hundred people, and its inauguration at the Bibliothèque nationale de France brought together figures from the literary, academic and media worlds, including Hélène Cixous, Vincent Message and Gisèle Sapiro. The project was conceived by journalists but deliberately opened its pages to non-professional writers, on the conviction that journalism is accessible to all. It presents itself as a "digital daily of ideas" and is directed by Sylvain Bourmeau, a figure who had previously participated in the launch of Politix, Les Inrockuptibles and Mediapart. The journal is financed by subscriptions, following the micro-media model. Editorially, AOC established a fixed rhythm: three articles per day from Monday to Friday — an Analyse, an Opinion and a Critique — a major interview of ideas or biographical trajectory on Saturday, and an unpublished literary text on Sunday. By September 2021 the title had four associated editors: Océane Ragoucy, Jean-Marie Durand, Julie Gacon and Benjamin Tainturier. In February 2022 AOC took part in the creation of the Stop Bolloré collective, campaigning against the concentration of media and publishing ownership. Alongside its online daily, AOC developed print activities. It launched the "Cahier" collection co-published with éditions La Découverte, and in December 2020 launched "Les Imprimés d'AOC", a series giving a second life to reference articles in the spirit of eighteenth-century brochures, with around ten titles to date, some bringing together two texts tête-bêche. In March 2025 AOC compiled around twenty reflections by philosophers, political scientists and sociologists on artificial intelligence into a quarterly paper review, opening with two editorials placed side by side, one written by ChatGPT and the other by co-founder Sylvain Bourmeau. The paper version of the media was launched in late March 2025; at that time the site counted 6,000 published articles signed by 2,700 authors. AOC has also been involved in public controversy. In February 2026, director Sylvain Bourmeau published an article criticising the review Le Grand Continent, accusing it of compromises with the far right. Le Grand Continent responded by denouncing "repeated attacks" with a "conspiratorial tone", claiming to have identified 45 passages containing objectively false, insidious or malicious assertions. Libération analysed the affair, with Simon Blin concluding that while it might appear picrocholine, it was not, given the unease it caused in the academic world and what it revealed about the competitive market of online intellectual reviews.
