Overview
Anton-Proksch-Haus is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) operated by the Salzburg regional organisation of Naturfreunde Österreichs (NFÖ), the Austrian Friends of Nature. It stands at 1,590 metres above sea level on the Ladenbergalm, directly north of the Bischlinghöhe, the well-known ski mountain above Werfenweng in the Salzburg region of Austria. The Bischlinghöhe is served by a modern gondola lift, which makes access to the Anton-Proksch-Haus a relaxed short hike. The hut is a base on the southern side of the Tennengebirge and a good starting point for hikes, mountain tours and traverses of the range, as well as for ski tours in winter. The Söldenhütte and the Freilassinger Hütte are nearby. The hut is named after Anton Proksch, Social Minister of the Republic of Austria and federal chairman of the Naturfreunde from 1966 to 1969. The Naturfreunde Bischofshofen bought the suitable land on the Ladenbergalm in 1957 and built the Anton-Proksch-Haus between 1961 and 1963. Since 1970 the hut can be reached much more easily with the help of the Tennengebirgsbahn to the Bischlinghöhe. A telephone connection followed in 1985, and in 1987 the access road was completed after only three months of construction. Notably, the tenants of the Anton-Proksch-Haus changed only rarely; since 1980 it has been run by Walter and Rosi Hinterhölzl. From autumn 2019 a new tenant was being sought. In 2025 the Naturfreunde named the Anton-Proksch-Haus "Hütte des Jahres" (Hut of the Year), honouring in particular the unique self-catering concept and the great voluntary commitment behind it. Access is typically from the Tauern Autobahn (A 10), exit Werfen, via the country road to Werfenweng and on to Zaglau, where there is a large car park at the valley station of the Werfenweng mountain railways (950 m). By train, one arrives at Werfen station or the Pfarrwerfen stop and continues by shuttle bus (on order only). From Zaglau the gondola lift goes up to the Bischlinghöhe (1,834 m), followed by a 45-minute descent to the hut. Other approaches include the Hüttenweg via the Strussing-Hütte and Freilassinger Hütte (2 hours), from Wengerau via the Söldenhütte and Laubichlalm (2 hours), from Spießhof, Sankt Martin-Lammertal, near Lungötz (965 m) via the Aualm and Jochriedel (2½ hours), and from Hüttau through the Larzenbachtal and over the Grundalm (3½ hours). Transitions to other huts include the Freilassinger Hütte (1,550 m, 20 minutes), the Söldenhütte (1,530 m, 30 minutes), the Laufener Hütte via Jochriedel, Tauernscharte, Bleikogel and Tennkessel (6 hours), the Edelweißerhütte via Jochriedel, Tauernscharte and Wengerscharte (6 hours), and the Leopold-Happisch-Haus via Jochriedel, Tauernscharte and Wengerscharte (7 hours). Summit ascents from the hut include the Frommerkogel (1,882 m, 2 hours), the Tauernkogel (2,247 m, 2½ hours), the Eiskogel (2,321 m, 3 hours) and the Bleikogel (2,412 m, 4½ hours).
