Overview
Antikomplex is a Czech non-profit organisation founded in 1998 by a group of students in Prague. It is dedicated to the critical reflection of Czech history, with a particular focus on the post-war ethnic cleansing and the subsequent fate of the landscape and society in the former Sudetenland. The organisation also works on innovations in education and political education. Its activities include producing exhibitions, organising public debates, publishing books through its own publishing house, training teachers, developing Czech-German educational projects, and participating in Czech and Czech-German historical, social and cultural dialogue. Its target audiences are active adults interested in the history and future of their country and their relationship to their locality, humanities teachers, young people interested in their own region and history, and Czech and German experts. Antikomplex's publishing output includes titles such as 'Zmizelé Sudety / Das verschwundene Sudetenland' (2004), 'Sudetské osudy' (2006), 'Proměny sudetské krajiny' (2006, nominated for the Czech book prize Magnesia litera), 'Krajina za školou' (2007), 'Sudetské příběhy / Sudetengeschichten' (2010), 'Matěj Spurný: Nejsou jako my' (2011), 'Zůstali tu s námi / Bei uns verblieben' (2013), 'Geschichten über erzwungene Wege' (2013) and 'Překračování hranic / Grenzüberschreitungen' (2013). The organisation runs travelling exhibitions such as 'Zmizelé Sudety / Das verschwundene Sudetenland', 'Tragická místa paměti / Tragische Erinnerungsorte', 'Překračování hranic / Grenzüberschreitungen', 'Krajina za školou' and 'Vzduchoplavec Kráčmera'. It has also produced documentary films, including 'Boží mlýny na prodej' (2013, dir. Filip Remunda), 'Každý po svém' (2013, dir. Jan Látal) and a series of 'Zapojme.se' films directed by Petr Mikšíček. Its projects span history and present-day reflection (e.g. 'Das verschwundene Sudetenland', 'Tragische Erinnerungsorte', 'Land Art – Königsmühle'), education for schools ('Krajina za školou', 'Vzduchoplavec Kráčmera', 'Překračování hranic', 'Na cestě za příběhy', 'Cyklovýlety do Sudet', 'Hraniční pásmo ve filmu'), political education ('Zapojme' internet portal and YouTube channel) and 'Děkov – od vědomí místa ke kořenům'. Portmann (Masaryk University, Brno) and Sarah Scholl-Schneider (Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz).
History
Antikomplex was founded in 1998 by a group of students in Prague. The aim was to foster critical dialogue about their own history, in particular the expulsion of Germans from Czechoslovakia in the post-war period. Initially, the topics were broad; for example, some events were devoted to coexistence with the Roma. Gradually, however, the profile developed into an organisation focused on reflecting the German-speaking history of the Czech lands and on reflecting the fate of the so-called Sudetenland, an area that until 1945 was inhabited mostly by a German-speaking population. The organisation's work is based on the conviction that the ability to openly reflect on one's own history has been one of the basic skills of every free society at least since the Second World War. The experiences gathered especially in reflecting Czech history and its connection to the present, particularly through the example of the renewal of life in the Sudeten regions, are reflected in new educational methods for school teaching that Antikomplex helps to shape. Another focus is political education, with the aim of promoting an active awareness of citizenship. Over the years Antikomplex has produced exhibitions, organised public debates, published books through its own publishing house, trained teachers, developed Czech-German educational projects and participated in Czech and Czech-German historical, social and cultural dialogue. Its publications include 'Zmizelé Sudety / Das verschwundene Sudetenland' (Prague, 2004), 'Sudetské osudy' (Prague, 2006), 'Proměny sudetské krajiny' (Prague, 2006, nominated for the Czech book prize Magnesia litera), 'Krajina za školou' (Prague, 2007), 'Krajina za školou v Praze' (Prague, 2008), 'Sudetské příběhy / Sudetengeschichten' (Prague, 2010), 'Matěj Spurný: Nejsou jako my' (Prague, 2011), 'Zůstali tu s námi / Bei uns verblieben' (Prague, 2013), 'Geschichten über erzwungene Wege. Zeitzeugen berichten Schülern aus Pilsen und Bremerhaven' (Prague, 2013) and 'Překračování hranic / Grenzüberschreitungen' (Prague, 2013). Travelling exhibitions have included 'Zmizelé Sudety / Das verschwundene Sudetenland', 'Tragická místa paměti / Tragische Erinnerungsorte', 'Překračování hranic / Grenzüberschreitungen', 'Krajina za školou' and 'Vzduchoplavec Kráčmera'. Documentary films produced or associated with Antikomplex include 'Boží mlýny na prodej' (2013, dir. Filip Remunda), 'Každý po svém' (2013, dir. Jan Látal) and a series of 'Zapojme.se' films (2013, dir. Petr Mikšíček): 'Stop tunelům', 'ArtRosa a Skleróza', 'Jezerní běh', 'Veselá vesnice', 'Zažít město jinak', 'Krušnohorský luft' and 'Libochovičky sobě'. Projects are grouped under reflection of history and present (e.g. 'Das verschwundene Sudetenland', 'Tragische Erinnerungsorte', 'Land Art – Königsmühle'), education for schools ('Krajina za školou', 'Vzduchoplavec Kráčmera', 'Překračování hranic', 'Na cestě za příběhy', 'Cyklovýlety do Sudet', 'Hraniční pásmo ve filmu'), political education ('Zapojme' internet portal and YouTube channel) and 'Děkov – od vědomí místa ke kořenům'.
