History
Ansys originated in 1970 as Swanson Analysis Systems, Inc., founded by John A. Swanson. Swanson had conceived the idea of automating finite-element analysis while working at Westinghouse's Astronuclear Laboratory. After Westinghouse declined to develop a general-purpose engineering analysis product, Swanson left in 1969 and established his own business the following year. He initially worked from a farmhouse near Pittsburgh, developing software on punch cards and using rented mainframe computing time. Westinghouse became the first user and also engaged Swanson as a consultant. The first commercial Ansys release, version 2.0, appeared in 1971. Early versions were designed for mainframe operation and produced results after batch processing. The product gradually added nonlinear and thermoelectric functions, then moved to VAX systems and personal computers. An Apple II release in 1980 helped support the transition toward graphical interaction, while later versions introduced broader electromagnetics and more accessible engineering workflows. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the company broadened beyond structural analysis. Its work with Compuflo brought fluid-dynamics technology into the product line, and the resulting capabilities were incorporated into later Ansys releases. Version 5, released in 1993, integrated the Flotran computational-fluid-dynamics technology. In 1994, Swanson sold his interest to TA Associates and Peter Smith became chief executive. The company was renamed Ansys after its software product. Ansys went public on NASDAQ in 1996. The same period saw the introduction or expansion of DesignSpace, LS-DYNA-related crash and drop simulation, computational fluid dynamics, and parallel-processing support. The company also expanded its academic offering with Ansys/ed. During the late 1990s and 2000s, it increasingly combined separate solvers and engineering tools within common workflows. Version 6, released in 2001, supported larger-scale modeling, while version 8 introduced multiphysics and fluid-structure-interaction capabilities. Workbench became a central environment for coordinating simulation tasks and data. Jim Cashman became chief executive in 2000. Under his leadership, Ansys pursued a sustained acquisition and product-expansion strategy covering fluid dynamics, electronics, materials, systems engineering, optics, and specialized physics. Later releases added composite and bolted-connection analysis, improved meshing, electronics design, probabilistic design, application-building tools, simulation process and data management, and facilities for bringing real-world product data into simulation workflows. The company also developed or acquired tools relevant to digital twins and digital engineering. Ajei S. Gopal became chief executive in 2017. During the 2020s, Ansys strengthened its semiconductor and electronic-design offerings through foundry certifications and expanded its support for advanced packaging and three-dimensional integrated circuits. It also worked with industrial, academic, and government partners on digital twins, additive manufacturing, aerospace systems, and engineering education. In 2020, Ansys joined the Digital Twin Consortium steering committee; its academic program later surpassed one million student downloads. Ansys's international business and technology footprint also generated scrutiny. Reports in 2020 and 2022 alleged that its software had reached Chinese entities connected with military or hypersonic-missile research, including organizations subject to export restrictions or known military links. Ansys stated that it had no records of the specified sales or shipments and suggested that piracy could have been involved. These reports form part of the company's regulatory and reputational history, although the cited allegations do not establish that Ansys intentionally supplied restricted technology. In January 2024, Synopsys announced an agreement to acquire Ansys. The transaction was intended to combine Synopsys's electronic-design and semiconductor portfolio with Ansys's engineering simulation and multiphysics software. The acquisition closed on July 17, 2025, after which Ansys became a Synopsys subsidiary. The Ansys brand and products remain active, but the company is no longer an independent public issuer.
