Overview

Animafac is a French national network of young and student associations, founded in 1996 by student association activists. Its purpose is to enable student associations to carry out their collective projects successfully, based on the exchange of experiences and practices between associations. It also aims to stimulate inter-association dynamics and to showcase student initiatives and engaged youth. The network was born from a dual observation: the massification of higher education in the 1980s and 1990s led to a strong fragmentation of university sites (opening of IUTs, university branches, etc.), creating a growing need for exchanges between increasingly dispersed students; and changes in the ways young people engage, who according to Animafac were less and less involved in student unionism but motivated by more thematic actions. To inform and support student association members, the network offers training in associative life and project management throughout France, national and regional meetings, a fully interactive website with practical and intellectual resources, a bi-monthly electronic newsletter, and a collection of guides and practical sheets. It also runs thematic workshops and geographic network facilitation, and coordinates awareness campaigns such as the engagement promotion campaign Engageons 2017, as well as programs on Europe, citizenship, anti-discrimination, and the social and solidarity economy. Animafac is legally a 1901 law association linked to the Ligue de l'Enseignement. It is directed by a board of 24 associations elected for two-year terms, representing the thematic and geographic diversity of the network. The general assembly is held annually in June in Paris. The organization has a professional team of about twenty employees and a network animation team of about thirty volunteers. It receives most of its funding through a multi-year objectives agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Animafac represents the student associative world within the Mouvement associatif and has been involved in various representative bodies, including the Conseil économique, social et environnemental (CESE) from 2011 to 2016. It is a founding member of the Comité du service civique associatif. In the field of social innovation, it develops projects such as La Riposte and Pro'Pulse, the latter receiving the medal of the City of Paris on 11 October 2018.

History

Animafac was created in 1996 by student association activists. It emerged from a dual observation: the massification of higher education in the 1980s and 1990s led to a strong fragmentation of university sites (opening of IUTs, university branches, etc.), creating a growing need for exchanges between increasingly dispersed students; and changes in the ways young people engage, who according to Animafac were less and less involved in student unionism but motivated by more thematic actions. The network was designed as a space for exchange of experiences and a resource center for student initiatives. Over the years, it developed training programs, national and regional meetings, an interactive website, a bi-monthly newsletter, and a collection of guides and practical sheets. It also organized thematic workshops and geographic network facilitation. In 2012, Animafac organized the Forum national des initiatives jeunes on 17 March at the Grande halle de la Villette, aiming to present youth associative engagement through thematic spaces and a festival. In 2017, it coordinated the engagement promotion campaign Engageons 2017. During the 2017 French presidential election between Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron, Animafac implicitly called in a tribune with sixty other associations to block the FN candidate. In the field of social innovation, Animafac developed projects such as La Riposte, a call for projects for students with socially innovative initiatives, and Pro'Pulse, a program to facilitate the professional integration of young people in the social and solidarity economy. On 11 October 2018, Animafac received the medal of the City of Paris for Pro'Pulse. Legally, Animafac is a 1901 law association linked to the Ligue de l'Enseignement. It is directed by a board of 24 associations elected for two-year terms. The general assembly is held annually in June in Paris. The organization has a professional team of about twenty employees and a network animation team of about thirty volunteers. It receives most of its funding through a multi-year objectives agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. Animafac represents the student associative world within the Mouvement associatif. It was elected from 2011 to 2016 to the Associations group of the Conseil économique, social et environnemental (CESE). It is a founding member of the Comité du service civique associatif. It brings together many national thematic federations such as le Génépi, la Confédération nationale des Junior-Entreprises, Radio Campus France, Étudiants et Développement, and le REFEDD.
