History

Angus Soft Fruits was established in 1994 in the berry fields of Angus, Scotland, founded by three passionate growers: Lochy Porter, his father Willie Porter and his cousin James Gray. The business was built on the ambition to work directly with retailers and continually raise the standard of berries available to consumers. In 2001, Dave Griffiths and Lochy Porter developed the tabletop Seaton System, which stretched the growing season from May to September and made it easier to pick fruit. In 2002, the Angus Soft Fruits Breeding Programme was established, now known as AVA™ Berries. In March 2003, the company imported its first strawberries and raspberries from Huelva in Spain. In May 2003, AVA™, the first strawberry variety from its own breeding programme, became the first premium berry in the UK market. In 2005, it launched the Good Natured brand, expanding into a range of salads, potatoes, vegetables and growing herbs. In 2010, it opened its Salford Priors packhouse near Evesham, which packs over 70 million units annually. In February 2014, it established a Strategic Partnership with Felgar Berries in Morocco. In May 2014, it launched the Angus Select brand. In 2015, it launched the AVA™ Berries brand. In 2016, it established Isle Fruits Ltd, which further stretched its UK season from March to December on 14ha of glasshouses in Somerset. In February 2018, AVA™ Leyre became its first Spanish premium strawberry. In May 2018, AVA™ Star and AVA™ Blush extended its premium offering in the market. In June 2018, AVA™ Star won 'Best new edible crop variety' at Horticulture Week Business Awards.
