History

The Angel Island Immigration Station, located in San Francisco Bay, served as the largest immigration port on the West Coast between 1910 and 1940, processing, detaining, and/or interrogating approximately 500,000 immigrants from 80 countries. In 1970, the site was slated for demolition because of its deteriorated condition; but the discovery of Chinese poetry that had been carved into the walls of the detention barracks saved it from destruction and led to renewed interest in the Angel Island Immigration Station. The Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation (AIISF) now works to protect the historic site, elevate its stories, promote learning, and celebrate the new beginnings and immigrant contributions that define the strength of the US.
