Overview
Angamaly Municipality is a municipality in Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. It is located in Aluva taluk, about 30 km north of Kochi city and 12 km from Nedumbassery airport. The town is a junction where National Highway 544 and MC Road meet, and it is a major marketing centre for spices. The name 'Angamaly' is derived from 'Mali', meaning ground, where warriors trained, leading to 'Angamaly'. The region was historically ruled by the Mangattu dynasty and later saw significant migration of Marthoma Christians. The first archdiocese in India was established with Angamaly as its centre. The municipality shares borders with Mookkannoor and Karukutty panchayats to the north, Thuravoor and Kalady panchayats to the east, Nedumbassery and Kanjoor panchayats to the south, and Nedumbassery panchayat to the west.
History
Angamaly was historically known as 'Mali', meaning ground, where the Archdeacons who governed the area after St. Thomas's visit to Kerala had at least 50,000 Nazrani warriors. They trained on this ground, and due to regular military exercises, 'Mali' became 'Angamaly'. In the late 16th century, the region was ruled by the Mangattu dynasty. Later, following major Jewish migration, many Marthoma Christians settled here. The first archdiocese in India, with jurisdiction over the whole of India, was established with Angamaly as its centre.
