Overview

Andantino is a French non-profit association (association loi 1901) founded on 24 March 2000 at the Centre spatial de Cannes - Mandelieu. Its name, a musical term, is also an acronym for "AssociatioN Des pArteNaires de l'OrchesTre RégIonal CaNnes Provence Alpes CÔte d'Azur". The organisation was created on the initiative of Catherine Morschel, administrative director of the orchestra, and two music-loving engineers from Alcatel Space, Thierry Deloye and Guy Lebègue, together with four founding companies: Alcatel Space, Eurocopter, the Centres Leclerc, and LSO International. Andantino functions as a corporate patronage club (club d'entreprises pratiquant le mécénat) built around the Orchestre national de Cannes and its successive conductors — Philippe Bender at the time of the association's creation, then Wolfgang Doerner from 2014, and Benjamin Levy from 2017. Its purpose is to bring together private- and public-sector companies that wish to support the orchestra's activities and help extend its national and international reach, notably through communication actions, international tours, and recording projects. The association offers member companies' employees free concerts and permanent discounts each year, and it develops an "Entreprise-Musique" partnership that lets companies run internal and external communication operations around the orchestra's concerts. In return, the orchestra performs two concerts per year, each time in Cannes and in the Marseille region. Andantino also organises musical evenings for prospective corporate members, "soirées découvertes" in cultural venues, and, from 2014, "Duos de chefs" events pairing the full orchestra with a restaurant chef's themed buffet. A choir, the Chœur Andantino, was created in March 2005, drawing singers from partner companies' staff and outside members. In 2011 the association was recognised as being of general interest (reconnue d'intérêt général), allowing it to issue tax receipts and thereby attract more corporate — and also individual — patrons. Its successive presidents have included Jean Zieger (2000), Jean-Pierre Henry (2003), and Lenny Spangberg (2009). Andantino has partnered with events such as the Victoires de la musique classique when held in Cannes, the MIDEM classical music evenings (including the 2008 "Opéra Night"), and, since 2005, Ève Ruggiéri's television programme Musiques au cœur, which performs in summer at Antibes.

History

Andantino was created on 24 March 2000 at the Centre spatial de Cannes - Mandelieu, on the initiative of Catherine Morschel, administrative director of the Orchestre national de Cannes, and two music-loving engineers from Alcatel Space, Thierry Deloye and Guy Lebègue. Four companies were founding members: Alcatel Space, Eurocopter, the Centres Leclerc, and LSO International. The name chosen, a musical term, doubles as an acronym for "AssociatioN Des pArteNaires de l'OrchesTre RégIonal CaNnes Provence Alpes CÔte d'Azur". The association's object is to bring together companies from the private and public sectors that wish to support the orchestra's activities and help its national and international influence, notably through communication actions, international tours, and recording projects. Its first president was Jean Zieger, director of the Cannes establishment, in 2000; Jean-Pierre Henry, also director of the Cannes establishment, took over in 2003; and Lenny Spangberg of Lenny Spangberg Consulting became president in 2009. In March 2005 the Chœur Andantino was created, a choir whose singers are staff members of partner companies and outside members paying an annual subscription. Concerts are given in Cannes and the Marseille region, where the association has members. Among the principal works presented was Mozart's Coronation Mass, performed on 16 March 2006 at the Théâtre Noga Croisette in Cannes and on 17 March elsewhere. In 2011 the association was recognised as being of general interest (reconnue d'intérêt général), enabling it to issue tax receipts, which attracted more companies to patronage as well as individuals. The association works for the orchestra in several ways: organising discovery evenings in privileged venues such as museums, reserved for patron companies and intended exclusively for their professional or private guests; organising orchestra visits to companies with meetings with the musicians; financing audiovisual productions such as records; and financing the orchestra's tours abroad, to which association members are invited to accompany it. Andantino has engaged several partnerships: with the Victoires de la musique classique when the evening is organised in Cannes; with the MIDEM classical music evenings, including the "Opéra Night" of MIDEM 2008, a prestige evening during which soprano Takesha Meshe Kizart sang Verdi and Wagner; and, since 2005, with Ève Ruggiéri's programme Musiques au cœur, performing in summer at Antibes. On 8 September 2018, with Enedis, it held an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Enedis' corporate orchestra, whose musicians are staff members, mingling with the Orchestre de Cannes under the baton of one of the directors, Benjamin Levy, and Michaël Cousteau, performing Stravinsky's The Firebird suite, earning a very long standing ovation. Andantino offers member companies' employees free concerts and permanent discounts each year. The Entreprise-Musique partnership developed by Andantino allows companies to carry out internal and external communication operations on the occasion of the orchestra's concerts. This is the orchestra's counterpart in producing two concerts per year, each time in Cannes and in the Marseille region. The orchestra and its conductor strive to diversify the works to introduce these new music lovers to the full palette of classical music, including opera. On 17 October 2013, it was for such an employee concert that the orchestra's new music director, Wolfgang Doerner, gave his first performance, at the Église de Bon Voyage in Cannes. The association organises musical evenings each year to prospect for new companies joining this patronage mission in the two regions of Provence and Côte d'Azur. Named "soirées découvertes" in 2015, these evenings are generally organised in major cultural venues combining museum discovery and musical moments, such as the Théâtre municipal Armand in Salon-de-Provence on 28 April 2010; the Château de Villeneuve-Loubet on 1 June 2010; the Palais des Arts in Marseille on 3 June 2010; the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence on 28 September 2010, enhanced by a visit to the Diego Giacometti exhibition; the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en-Provence on 19 September 2011; the Musée de la Castre in Cannes on 27 March 2012; the Musée des Arts asiatiques de Nice on 10 May 2012; the Palais sarde in Nice on 5 June 2014, an occasion to celebrate the association's 15th anniversary; the Villa Rothschild in Cannes — now a médiathèque — on 12 May 2015; and the club des dirigeants d'entreprise de Nice Arenas on 28 September 2017. In 2014 another type of evening was created: the "Duo de chefs", combining the full orchestra under its conductor with a restaurant whose chef prepares a themed buffet. The 2017 version, organised at the restaurant of the Hôtel Majestic Barrière in Cannes, under its chef Maryan Gandon who prepared a Provençal buffet, allowed listeners to hear the orchestra under its new conductor Benjamin Levy performing Georges Bizet's L'Arlésienne, in an original version to illustrate Alphonse Daudet's play drawn from the famous Lettres de mon moulin, with Bernard Pisani as narrator.
