Overview

AMZS (Avto-moto zveza Slovenije) is the central Slovenian automobile and motorcycle association, a membership-based organization that combines advocacy for road safety with a broad portfolio of commercial motoring services. Its origins trace back to 1909, when the Krainer Automobil-klub (Carniolan Automobile Club) was founded on the initiative of Baron Friderik Born. After the disruptions of the two World Wars and the reorganization of Yugoslav motoring clubs, the association was re-established in its current form on 5 September 1948 as Avto-moto zveza Slovenije. Since then it has grown into the country's leading motoring club, known for roadside assistance, driver education, and technical services. AMZS operates a wide range of services for both members and the general public. These include roadside assistance in Slovenia and abroad, vehicle technical inspections and registrations, purchase inspections, homologation checks, and tractor inspections in the field. It runs driving schools and safe-driving centers, and it is active in motorsport through its karting and motorcycle sport center. The association also publishes Motorevija, a motoring magazine it has issued since 1957. Membership is tiered, with options such as Start, Osnovno, Plus, Premium, and family variants, offering benefits and partner discounts. As a membership organization, AMZS is not a conventional profit-driven corporation, but it functions as a commercial brand in the Slovenian market, offering insurance intermediation, travel-related health and tourist insurance, legal advice, and financial assistance. Its headquarters are in Ljubljana, and its services are available throughout Slovenia. The association is also involved in public campaigns and events, such as drive-in cinema and picnic cinema events, and it maintains partnerships with athletes and other organizations. AMZS remains a central institution in Slovenian motoring culture, combining consumer services with a long-standing public safety mission.

History

The history of AMZS begins on 16 July 1909, when the first automobile club in Slovenian territory, the Krainer Automobil-klub (Carniolan Automobile Club), was founded on the initiative of Baron Friderik Born. Its founding principles were sport, promotion of tourism, explaining the importance of motoring, and educating drivers. In 1920 the club was renamed the Automobile Club for Slovenia, and soon after the Yugoslav Automobile Club, as it sought to issue international documents—a privilege granted to only one club per country. The idea of uniting all national clubs in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes led to the creation of the Automobile Club of the Kingdom of SHS in 1924. For Slovenian territory, a Ljubljana section was established, followed by a Maribor section in 1925. In the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, these sections merged due to the administrative division of the state into banovinas. With the outbreak of World War II, all club activities ceased. In occupied Ljubljana, an Italian royal automobile club operated for a time. In 1944, the Partisans issued a wartime traffic rulebook and introduced vehicle registration. After the war, club activities did not resume directly. On 5 September 1948, the Avto-moto zveza Slovenije was founded, initially primarily coordinating its members and clubs. Over the years, the scope of activities expanded. One of the most important was roadside assistance, which began on 1 October 1959 under the name Služba pomoč-informacije (Help-Information Service). Since 1957, the association has published a magazine, today known as Motorevija. In the decades that followed, AMZS developed into a comprehensive motoring organization. It established driving schools and safe driving centers, technical inspection stations, and a karting and motorcycle sport center. It also expanded into insurance intermediation, travel assistance, legal advice, and member benefits. The association has maintained its role as the central Slovenian motoring club, representing drivers' interests and promoting road safety. Its membership tiers and services have evolved to meet modern needs, including online registration cost calculations and digital membership management. AMZS remains active in public events and campaigns, such as drive-in cinema and picnic cinema, and continues to publish Motorevija as a key communication channel with its members.
