Overview

The Amical de Mauthausen y otros campos y de todas las víctimas del nazismo de España is a non-profit association founded in 1962 in Barcelona, in clandestinity, by former deportees including Joan Pagès, Amadeu López Arias and Joaquim Amat-Piniella. Its original purpose was to defend the moral and material rights of the roughly 10,000 Spaniards deported to the concentration camps of the Third Reich and of their families, to strengthen solidarity among them and to preserve their memory. The association takes the name of Mauthausen because that Austrian camp received the largest number of Spanish deportees, but it represents deportees of all camps of the Third Reich. Legalized in 1978, it then adopted the full name Amical de Mauthausen y otros campos y de todas las víctimas del nazismo de España. It brings together around 900 members — survivors, widows, children and other relatives, as well as sympathizers — in Spain, France and the Americas. Its symbol is inspired by the blue triangle with the S that the Nazis sewed onto the uniforms of republicans in Mauthausen; blue was the color used to identify stateless persons. According to statutes approved in 2001, its governing bodies are the assembly of members and the Junta. The Assembly, held annually, approves the previous year's management, renews or ratifies Junta members and sets future lines of action. The Junta meets weekly to handle ongoing matters and plan work. The Amical's objectives are to preserve the memory of what happened in the Nazi concentration camps and, drawing on the lessons of the past, to fight racism, xenophobia and antisemitism. Its activities include educational work such as talks in secondary schools and universities and annual trips with students to Mauthausen and other camps, as well as denouncing the activities of neo-Nazi groups. Together with SOS Racismo it brought the accusation against the Librería Kalki, raided in 2003 by the Mossos d'Esquadra for selling and distributing Nazi material and propaganda. It produces itinerant pedagogical exhibitions available on loan to institutions, cultural and educational entities and associations, and publishes the magazine ¡Nunca más! (Never Again). It has received the Creu de Sant Jordi from the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1995, the Medalla d'Honor de Barcelona in 2001, and the Premi Guillem Agulló in 2025. It also signed an agreement with the Generalitat de Catalunya to catalogue its documentary collection.
