Overview

Ameda is a breastfeeding-solutions brand whose portfolio spans hospital-grade and personal breast pumps, breast care items, and breast milk collection and storage options, marketed from hospital to home. Its history traces to Swedish engineer Einar Egnell, who developed the world's first hospital-grade breast pump in 1942; Ameda AG was founded in 1970. The brand states it is WHO Code compliant and highlights its Universal HygieniKit milk collection system with an FDA-cleared protective barrier.

History

Ameda's history begins with Swedish engineer Einar Egnell, who more than 80 years ago made it his life's work to help breastfeeding mothers and, after years of research, created the first comfortable and effective breast pump that closely mimics the sucking rhythm of nursing infants, also creating the vacuum and cycling standards used by lactation professionals to judge breast pump quality. In 1942 Egnell developed the world's first hospital-grade breast pump, and Ameda AG was founded in 1970. Subsequent milestones include the 1984 Lact-E, described as the first portable hospital-grade breast pump; the 1993 Elite, described as the world's first breast pump with a micro-processor; the 1994 world's first and only FDA-cleared pump kit with Airlock Protection; the 1998 Purely Yours, described as the world's first piston-driven personal pump; and the 2010 Platinum breast pump, a premium hospital-grade pump with vacusense technology. In 2016 Ameda acquired the Penguin Warming System. In 2017 the Finesse breast pump was Ameda's first personal pump designed for insurance reimbursement, and in 2019 the Ameda Mya was Ameda's first personal pump with a rechargeable battery. In 2020 Ameda's first mobile personal pump designed to work with the Universal HygieniKit™ Milk Collection System, the Mya Joy, was created, with Mya Joy and Mya Joy PLUS introduced in 2020 and 2021 as Ameda's first mobile personal pumps designed to work with the Universal HygieniKits™. In 2022 Pearl® was launched as Ameda's most mobile hospital-grade pump designed for use in the hospital and at home, and in 2025 Ameda introduced the GLO™, described as a true hands-free, tubing-free wearable pump built for modern moms seeking comfort, discretion, and performance.
