Overview
AMC International AG (formally AMC International Alfa Metalcraft Corporation AG) is a Swiss-headquartered direct-sales company specialising in premium stainless-steel cookware and smart cooking systems. The group is headquartered in Rotkreuz in the municipality of Risch, Switzerland, and is not listed on any stock exchange. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Vesta Beteiligungs GmbH, the Idar-Oberstein-based holding company through which the Fissler family bundles its entrepreneurial activities, which also include the cookware manufacturer Fissler GmbH. The company was founded in 1963 in Bingen am Rhein, Germany, as the American Metalcraft Corporation. It internationalised in 1966 with the creation of the AMC International holding and a Swiss subsidiary at the new Rotkreuz headquarters. In 1974 it was renamed Alfa Metalcraft Corporation. Today the holding operates as AMC International Alfa Metalcraft Corporation AG, with national subsidiaries including AMC (Schweiz) Alfa Metalcraft AG in Switzerland, AMC Alfa Metalcraft Corporation Handelsgesellschaft mbH in Germany and AMC Oesterreich Handelsgesellschaft mbH in Austria. AMC sells its products primarily through direct sales: independent sales representatives organise cooking demonstrations ("Kochtreffs") in private homes, where customers can see and test the products. These events also serve to recruit new distribution partners. The AMC Group is active in more than 30 countries and reports more than 15 million customers. It employs around 18,000 people worldwide, of whom 12,400 are in sales and 3,260 are distribution partners. The product range includes stainless-steel pot sets, pans, woks, special lids, accessories and smart cooking devices. AMC pots are suitable for all cooking systems and have been induction-compatible since 1996. Over the years the company has introduced innovations such as the quick-cooking lid, the Powervac vacuum system and the Navigenio ceramic hob, which uses an integrated radio module to control the cooking process fully automatically. The current marketing emphasises a "smart cooking system" with the AMC Cook & Go App, which offers over 1,000 recipes, step-by-step guidance and automatic control of temperature and time when connected to an AMC Cooking System. AMC has received positive test results, for example a "Good" rating from Stiftung Warentest in 2009 for its cooking system, but has also faced criticism over its price-performance ratio, with testers considering the high price not justified relative to competitors. The company is a partner of the Swiss Junior National Culinary Team.
History
AMC International AG was founded in 1963 in Bingen am Rhein, Germany, as the American Metalcraft Corporation. The company initially manufactured stainless-steel cooking sets and accessories, sold them through direct sales and granted a lifetime guarantee on the products. This guarantee was later limited to 30 years in Germany due to the legal prohibition of longer guarantees; it applies worldwide to all stainless-steel parts of the range, i.e. pots, pans, bowls and basins. For the AMC products SecuQuick, Visiotherm, Audiotherm and Navigenio, a two-year guarantee applies. In 1966 the company internationalised by founding the holding AMC International and a Swiss subsidiary at the new headquarters in Rotkreuz. In 1974 the company was renamed from American Metalcraft Corporation to Alfa Metalcraft Corporation. Today the holding operates as AMC International Alfa Metalcraft Corporation AG, the Swiss subsidiary as AMC (Schweiz) Alfa Metalcraft AG, the German as AMC Alfa Metalcraft Corporation Handelsgesellschaft mbH and the Austrian as AMC Oesterreich Handelsgesellschaft mbH. Production takes place in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and, for the Indian market, also in India. The product range includes various stainless-steel pot sets and kitchen accessories. AMC pots are suitable for all cooking systems and have been induction-compatible since 1996. Over the years AMC has introduced various innovations, including the quick-cooking lid, the Powervac vacuum system and the Navigenio ceramic hob, which uses an integrated radio module to control the cooking process fully automatically. The AMC Group is now active in more than 30 countries and has more than 15 million customers. Worldwide it employs 18,000 people, of whom 12,400 are in sales and 3,260 are distribution partners. AMC is a 100% subsidiary of Vesta Beteiligungs GmbH, based in Idar-Oberstein, in which the Fissler family has bundled its entrepreneurial activities. Besides AMC, this also includes the cookware manufacturer Fissler GmbH, also based in Idar-Oberstein. The entire Vesta Group generated revenue of EUR 390.7 million in 2018 and employed 2,432 people. The Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Swiss AMC parent company is Friederike Fissler-Pechtl, who together with Folkhart Fissler is also Managing Director of the group parent Vesta. Friederike Fissler-Pechtl took over the VR presidency in July 2000 from her father Harald Fissler, the former Managing Director and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Fissler Group. The German subsidiary Alfa Metalcraft Corporation Handelsgesellschaft mbH, based in Bingen am Rhein, belongs to VESTA GmbH in Idar-Oberstein and is led by Lothar Klein. In 2013 it generated revenue of EUR 107.3 million (69% of which was domestic) and an annual surplus of EUR 2.9 million. In a test by Stiftung Warentest in 2009, the AMC cooking system was rated "Good". AMC thus took third place among 17 tested products for the repeated time. One point of criticism from the testers was the high price for the pots compared with competitors' products. In the testers' opinion, the product properties of the AMC cooking units did not constitute a unique selling proposition. For this reason, the price was considered unjustified by the testers.
