Overview
Ambience is a large cruise ship operated by British cruise company Ambassador Cruise Line. The vessel entered service in 1991 as Regal Princess, a Princess Cruises ship built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone, Italy. Its design originated in a 1980s newbuilding programme associated with Sitmar Cruises and was developed in the broader P&O and Princess Cruises corporate network. The exterior design was by Italian architect Renzo Piano and is distinguished by a forward superstructure with a curved profile inspired by a bottlenose dolphin. The ship was delivered to Astamar, a P&O subsidiary, on 20 July 1991 and was formally named Regal Princess in New York by former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher on 8 August 1991. It initially operated Caribbean cruises from Fort Lauderdale in winter and Alaskan itineraries in summer. In 1992 its ownership moved to Princess Cruises and its registry changed from Italian to Liberian. A major refurbishment took place in 2000. From 2000 to 2003, the ship also operated Australian itineraries from Sydney before returning to European routes in the Mediterranean and Baltic seas. Regal Princess experienced several operational incidents during its first Princess Cruises period, including a 2001 grounding near Cairns and a 2003 norovirus outbreak that affected passengers and crew during a transatlantic repositioning voyage. In 2007 it moved to P&O Cruises Australia after other proposed transfers to A'Rosa Cruises and Ocean Village were cancelled. Following a substantial refurbishment, it was renamed Pacific Dawn and entered service for the Australian market. The new name and livery formed part of P&O Cruises Australia's 75th-anniversary programme. During this period the ship was based at Australian ports and offered cruises to the South Pacific and other regional destinations. Later upgrades included dining, pool-deck and activity facilities, including a zip line, climbing wall and crow's-nest experience. Pacific Dawn was involved in further events including a 2007 grounding at Huatulco, a 2009 swine-flu outbreak involving passengers in Sydney, and a 2010 loss-of-power incident near Brisbane's Gateway Bridge. In 2018 a passenger went overboard during a voyage from Australia; a subsequent police investigation concluded that the death was a suicide. P&O Cruises Australia announced in 2019 that the ship would be retired, with a planned transfer to Cruise & Maritime Voyages and a proposed renaming as Amy Johnson. That plan collapsed after CMV entered administration in 2020 during the COVID-19 crisis. The ship was sold in late 2020 to Ocean Builders Central and renamed Satoshi, after the pseudonymous creator associated with Bitcoin. The purchaser proposed using it as a floating residential and technology community in Panama, with cabin ownership, commercial spaces and cryptocurrency-oriented services. The plan could not secure suitable insurance and was abandoned. After a further sale in 2021 and a period laid up in Montenegro, the vessel was selected by newly established Ambassador Cruise Line. It was renamed Ambience and underwent a refit at the Viktor Lenac shipyard near Rijeka. Its first Ambassador sailing was delayed by refit and supply-chain issues and ultimately began in April 2022. Ambience is positioned as an adult-focused cruise product within Ambassador's value-oriented British cruise proposition. It operates primarily from the United Kingdom, including Tilbury, and serves European and longer-distance destinations. The ship has also been used for extended voyages, including a planned world cruise. In December 2022 a safety issue at the lifeboat stations caused the cancellation of an embarkation and a subsequent Christmas and New Year itinerary; repairs were completed in Bremerhaven by early January 2023. Ambassador has announced Starlink connectivity for its fleet and planned further technical work for Ambience, including equipment intended to permit cold ironing while in port.
History
Ambience was conceived during the expansion of Sitmar Cruises' North American fleet in the late 1980s. After Sitmar was acquired by P&O in 1988, ships under construction were transferred into the Princess Cruises system. Fincantieri built the vessel at Monfalcone, Italy, using a design related to Sitmar's planned 70,000-gross-ton ships. Renzo Piano redesigned the exterior, whose curved forward profile became one of the vessel's most recognizable visual features. The ship was launched from dry dock on 29 March 1990, completed sea trials in June 1991 and was delivered on 20 July 1991. As Regal Princess, it was named in New York on 8 August 1991 by Margaret Thatcher. Its early schedule combined Caribbean winters with Alaskan summers. Princess later used it on Australian voyages and then on Mediterranean and Baltic routes. A 2000 refurbishment supported its continued operation across these markets. The ship's first decades also included a norovirus outbreak during a 2003 repositioning voyage, when the itinerary was altered so that the vessel could proceed directly to New York for medical management and disinfection. In late 2007 the vessel moved to P&O Cruises Australia and became Pacific Dawn after refurbishment. It was christened by Australian Olympic athlete Cathy Freeman. The name and all-white hull reflected P&O Cruises Australia's 75th anniversary. Pacific Dawn was used extensively in the Australian market, with home-port changes and dry-dock work in Brisbane and Sydney. The 2014 refit added recreational attractions and refreshed public areas. Its service history included groundings at Cairns in 2001, while still Regal Princess, and Huatulco in 2007, shortly before or around the transition to Pacific Dawn, as well as a power-loss near Brisbane in 2010. P&O Cruises Australia planned to retire Pacific Dawn in 2021 and transfer it to Cruise & Maritime Voyages under the proposed name Amy Johnson. The transaction did not proceed after CMV entered administration in July 2020 amid the pandemic-driven collapse in cruise operations. The ship was instead sold to Ocean Builders Central, renamed Satoshi and proposed as a floating residential community in Panama. Insurance difficulties prevented the seastead concept from becoming operational, and the ship was sold again in 2021. After being laid up in Montenegro, the vessel was announced as the first ship for Ambassador Cruise Line in May 2021. It was refitted at Viktor Lenac near Rijeka and renamed Ambience. Its inaugural Ambassador voyage, initially planned for April 2022, was rescheduled to 20 April. The ship has since operated from the United Kingdom on European and longer-distance itineraries. A brief detention in May 2022 followed the discovery of fuel-system deficiencies. In December 2022, safety deficiencies at lifeboat stations forced the cancellation of two voyages, with repairs completed at Bremerhaven in early 2023. Ambassador has subsequently announced connectivity improvements and additional technical upgrades, including equipment intended to reduce generator use in port.
