Overview

Amazon Prime Air is Amazon's drone-delivery service for transporting eligible small packages from fulfillment facilities to customers' homes or nearby delivery locations. It relies on Amazon's e-commerce, warehousing, and logistics infrastructure, while autonomous aircraft handle the delivery flight. Prime Air is not a separate airline; it is a technology-enabled service within Amazon's delivery network. Amazon publicly introduced the drone-delivery concept in 2013 and subsequently worked on aircraft development, regulatory approvals, and operational testing. Public availability is limited by service-area coverage, package eligibility, weather, and aviation regulation.

History

Amazon Prime Air grew out of Amazon's effort to explore drone-based last-mile delivery. Amazon publicly presented the concept of using drones to deliver small packages in 2013, then continued work on aircraft design, autonomous navigation, delivery safety, and regulatory approval. The basic operating model is for a drone to depart from a fulfillment facility, carry an eligible order to a customer's residence or designated delivery location, and return after the drop-off. Because residential drone operations involve airspace management, aviation safety, and operational reliability, commercialization requires both regulatory authorization and suitable logistics conditions. Amazon later began limited real-world deliveries in the United States and continued working on aircraft and service-area expansion. Publicly available information indicates that Prime Air remains a delivery service constrained by geography, package eligibility, weather, and regulation rather than a universal option for all Amazon orders.
