Overview
Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA) describes itself as Austria's leading collection and recovery system for packaging. For more than three decades it has developed solutions for the collection and recovery of packaging, electrical appliances and batteries, focusing on closing material cycles through partnerships, investment in digital innovation and research & development. For its customers it assumes all obligations arising from the packaging ordinance, the waste electrical equipment ordinance and the batteries ordinance, and handles separate collection and environmentally sound recycling. ARA states that it is owned by the Austrian business community and consistently follows the non-profit principle; in its core business of 'Entpflichtung' (exemption from obligations) it acts strictly according to the non-profit principle. It also advises companies in the areas of circular design, waste and material flow management, handles implementation and logistics, and drives the digitalisation of the circular economy. The ARA Group consists of ARA AG and its four subsidiaries ARAplus GmbH, ERA Elektro Recycling Austria GmbH, Austria Glas Recycling GmbH and DiGiDO GmbH. Its management board spokespersons are Harald Hauke and Thomas Eck.
History
ARA states that for more than three decades it has developed solutions for the collection and recovery of packaging, electrical appliances and batteries, with a focus on closing material cycles through strong partnerships, investment in digital innovation and research & development. Its published milestones include 2018, when it says Austria had for years been among the EU leaders in recycling and the EU circular economy package targets for paper, glass and metal packaging were already met, and when ARA supported customers with circular design initiatives; and 2022, which it marks as the start of two milestones: the launch of the Digi-Cyle app and the groundbreaking for what it describes as Europe's most modern sorting plant for lightweight packaging in Upper Austria, aimed at reaching the EU goal of 50 percent recycling of plastic packaging.
