Overview

Altos de Chipión is a locality in the San Justo Department of Córdoba Province, Argentina. According to the 2022 INDEC census, it has 2,048 inhabitants, representing a 19% increase from the 1,728 inhabitants recorded in 2010. The town was founded on 6 May 1910 by engineer Atanasio Iturbe, who authorized the transfer of a town to be located within his property named Altos de Chipión. The name is attributed to a cacique named Chipión who is said to have dominated the region, while 'Altos' refers to the local topography relative to the nearby Mar Chiquita. The town's patron saint is San Eduardo, celebrated on 13 October. The economy is primarily based on agriculture and livestock, with 16,000 hectares dedicated to livestock and another 16,000 to forage, cereals, and oilseeds. There are 45 dairy farms. The secondary sector includes a cheese factory that sells regionally and in northern Argentina, a mattress factory, a toilet paper factory, and a plastics and paper recycling plant. The town has educational institutions at various levels, including primary, secondary, and tertiary education, as well as a museum, a parish church, and a sports club. Altos de Chipión is a human settlement, not a commercial brand, and thus does not fit the brand knowledge base taxonomy.

History

The area around Altos de Chipión was inhabited before the official founding. In the early independent period, around 1815, Fortín Chipión was built for frontier defense against indigenous peoples. It was a simple outpost, and later forts such as Quebracho Herrado, Garabato, Trinchera, and Chipión were constructed, with José Nazario Sosa as commander. Although no founding act exists, engineer Atanasio Iturbe, born in Jujuy on 4 February 1870 and graduated as a civil engineer in 1895, is recognized as the founder. From his home in Buenos Aires, on 20 April 1910, he granted special power to Julio Ramallo to process the approval for the transfer of a town to be located within his property named Altos de Chipión. The power authorized the donation of land for streets, squares, and public buildings to the government of Córdoba. Altos de Chipión was founded on 6 May 1910. The train line Deán Funes-Laguna Paiva of the Ferrocarril Central Norte Argentino began operating on 21 November 1911, inaugurating its Altos de Chipión station. By that date, the town had been officially founded for a year and a half, though settlements may have existed since the late 19th century. Immigrants, especially from Piedmont, Italy, and Spain, consolidated the town. The Centro Educativo Reconquista opened on 9 March 1925. The Instituto Secundario José Manuel Estrada was created in 1963 and awarded its first commercial expert title in 1971. The parish church San Eduardo Rey was built in 1925. The town has grown steadily, reaching 2,048 inhabitants in 2022.
