Alto-Shaam

Alto-Shaam is a multi-generational, privately-owned manufacturer of premium foodservice equipment. The company was incorporated on January 26, 1955, after Jerry Maahs bought Alto Distributing Company and paired it with the Maahs family name spelled backwards. It invented Halo Heat® technology and the original Cook & Hold oven, and today offers products including convection ovens, multi-cook ovens, cook & hold ovens, combination ovens, and ChefLinc™ remote oven management.

Alto-Shaam's history began when Jerry Maahs first entered the foodservice industry by purchasing a Chicken Delight store. Over 13 years, he grew the business to 13 locations. He began experimenting with heating methods to keep chicken hot for customers in cold Wisconsin winters. Jerry Maahs bought Alto Distributing Company (owned by Al and Tom) to launch his holding products; paired with the Maahs family name spelled backwards, the name Alto-Shaam was born. Alto-Shaam became incorporated on January 26, 1955. In the 1960s, the invention of Halo Heat® technology emerged from Jerry's experiments to keep food warm for home delivery, and he outfitted the box into VW bug delivery vehicles. Jerry then stepped away from his restaurant franchises to exclusively design and manufacture foodservice equipment. Responding to a customer's need, Alto-Shaam invented the original Cook & Hold oven, creating a new category of low-temperature cooking, and Jerry showcased his invention at the 1968 National Restaurant Association Show. Alto-Shaam opened its first manufacturing location, a 7,500 square foot building located on Kiehnau Avenue in Milwaukee, WI.
