History

Altesino, formally "Azienda Agricola Altesino", is a winery and farm estate set amongst the north eastern hills of Montalcino in southern Tuscany, forty kilometers south of Siena. The imposing 15th century Palazzo Altesi overlooks the estate; it was built by the Tuscan Tricerchi family, whose marble crest can still be seen over the old oak entrance door. Since 2002 Altesino has been owned by the Gnudi Angelini family, and the technical and production sectors avail themselves of the collaboration of Paolo Caciorgna. The company describes itself as a ventureer of important structural innovations that have involved Brunello di Montalcino for forty years. As a forerunner in the pursuit of excellence, it introduced the "Cru" concept with Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli in 1975, was the first winery to use barriques in 1979, and in 1977 created and produced the first Grappa di Fattoria.
