Overview

The Altes Schützenhaus (Old Shooting House) is a historic building in the Stadtpark of Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, completed on 19 September 1828 as a classicist plastered building with wooden pilasters in the central section. It originally served the Haller Schützenkompanie (Schwäbisch Hall shooting company) as a shooting house. Around 1900 it was used as the residence of the city gardener. From the 1920s the city of Schwäbisch Hall intensified its spa operations, and on 27 June 1936 the building was leased by the city as a restaurant; the "Anlagencafé" opened with a concert, with the confectioner E. Bott as the first tenant. In 1966 the city made the building available to the newly founded Club Alpha 60 as a club home, but the club had to move out at the turn of 1980/81 in preparation for the 1982 Landesgartenschau (state garden show). Today the building houses a café with a summer outdoor garden where concerts and smaller festivals take place. The café, trading as Anlagencafé, offers burgers (Classic Cheese, Special, SunnySide with avocado and fried egg, vegetarian options with halloumi and beetroot or sweet potato-bean patty), coffee from Coffee Circle (fairly imported and roasted in Berlin, with €1 per kilo going to aid projects in growing regions), cocktails including classics and modern creations, and hosts events. It also offers jobs in full-time, part-time, mini-job and for pupils and students, and has a newsletter. The building is municipally owned and leased to the café operator.

History

The Altes Schützenhaus was completed on 19 September 1828 as a "classicist plastered building with wooden pilasters in the central section." Eugen Gradmann classifies the building under "Classicism of the 19th century." Despite later structural changes, the former shooting house remains recognizable: on the south side facing the garden, the house was open in the middle during the Biedermeier period, where the shooting ranges were located. In the two masonry tower stumps opposite, the "Zeigertürme" (indicator towers), helpers could hide safely from shots in order to report hits to the shooters. After completion in 1828, the Haller Schützenkompanie used the building as a shooting house. Around 1900 it was the residence of the city gardener. Since the city of Schwäbisch Hall had been pushing its spa operations since the 1920s, on 27 June 1936 the building was leased by the city as a restaurant. The "Anlagencafé" opened with a concert. The first tenant was the confectioner E. Bott. In 1966 the city of Schwäbisch Hall made the building available to the newly founded Club Alpha 60 as a club home. The club had to move out at the turn of 1980/81 in the course of preparations for the 1982 Landesgartenschau. Today it houses a café with a summer outdoor garden where concerts and smaller festivals take place. The café, operating as Anlagencafé, offers a menu including burgers, coffee from Coffee Circle, and cocktails, and provides employment opportunities.
