Alside

Alside represents over seven decades of inspired innovation. Founded in 1947, Alside is a leading distributor of a comprehensive range of products including windows, siding, metals, accessories and tools. Alside products are distributed to licensed professional remodeling contractors and home builders through a network of more than 100 Alside Supply Centers and select independent distributors across the country.

Alside was founded in 1947 by Jerome Kaufman, along with his brother Manual (Mickey) and several other associates. After observing how paint bonds to aluminum fuselages on World War II planes, Jerome Kaufman, owner of one of the largest retail home improvement dealers in the United States, invented the first residential baked enamel aluminum siding. In 1955, Donald Kaufman, brother of Jerome, joined Alside in the legal department, and Alside entered the distribution business by opening its first company-owned supply centers in Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Chicago. In 1960, Alside became a public company, and a new modern facility housing manufacturing and corporate offices was constructed in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, after the original building was destroyed by fire; this facility still serves as the corporate headquarters today. In 1961, Alside was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1965, all of Alside's outstanding stock was acquired by U.S. Steel, and Alside became the acknowledged leader in both the steel and aluminum siding industry. In 1968, steel siding was introduced on a limited basis, and Alside International was established in Puerto Rico to produce stone siding, with brick panels following soon after. In 1971, Alside began distribution of aluminum windows and storm doors.
