Overview
Alpina Rhein-Main is a German local public transport operator based in Frankfurt am Main and today a subsidiary of Transdev GmbH, the German arm of the international Transdev mobility group. The company traces its origins to Alpina Verkehrsbetriebe, founded in the 1950s, and the well-known "Alpina" name has survived several corporate restructurings as a brand for bus services in the Rhein-Main area. Its legal successor, Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH (formerly Veolia Verkehr Rhein-Main GmbH), was created in 2009 through the merger of Alpina Rhein-Main GmbH & Co. KG and Alpina Bad Homburg GmbH. Alpina operates scheduled bus routes under contract to local transport authorities. In Frankfurt am Main it runs the so-called Linienbündel A, a package of city bus lines, with a fleet of roughly 65 buses that includes standard, small, midi and articulated vehicles to meet different operator requirements. Since 1 January 2016 it has also operated the municipal bus networks of Bad Homburg and Oberursel, and since 11 December 2016 the town service in Friedrichsdorf plus three lines in the Offenbach district. Earlier operations also covered lines in Maintal. As part of Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH, the Alpina operation employs around 350 qualified staff, of whom roughly 300 work in driving service. The company maintains depots in Frankfurt-Kalbach, Bad Homburg and Seligenstadt. Transdev describes itself as Germany's largest private mobility provider, carrying around 200 million passengers a year with about 9,000 employees, and as part of the international Transdev group headquartered in Paris, active on five continents in 19 countries with 107,000 employees. Transdev's shareholders are the family-owned RETHMANN group and the French Caisse des Dépôts. Alpina's positioning is that of a regional, contract-based public transport brand: it does not sell vehicles or tickets as a consumer product but provides municipal and regional bus services under the Alpina name, combining local presence with the resources of a large international mobility group. Its website, busfahrer-frankfurt.de, doubles as a recruitment channel, advertising jobs for bus drivers and other staff under the Alpina employer brand.
History
The roots of Alpina lie in Alpina Verkehrsbetriebe, a company founded in the 1950s that built up bus operations in the Rhein-Main region around Frankfurt am Main. Over more than five decades the Alpina name became established as a local bus operator, running scheduled services in Frankfurt, Bad Homburg, Oberursel and Maintal. The business was organized in several regional companies, including Alpina Rhein-Main GmbH & Co. KG, based in Frankfurt am Main, and Alpina Bad Homburg GmbH; a further sister company, Alpina Limburg, was closed on 30 June 2008. By the 2000s the Alpina companies belonged to the Veolia Verkehr group, the German public transport arm of what later became the international Transdev group. On 14 May 2009, Alpina Rhein-Main GmbH & Co. KG and Alpina Bad Homburg GmbH were merged into a new legal entity, Veolia Verkehr Rhein-Main GmbH. This company was later renamed Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH when the Veolia Verkehr business was rebranded under the Transdev name. Although the original Alpina Rhein-Main company ceased to exist as a separate legal entity in 2009, the well-known "Alpina" name was retained as a brand for the bus operations, and the website presents the business as "Alpina Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH", a subsidiary of Transdev GmbH. In the years after the merger the Alpina operation continued to win and operate contract bus networks. In Frankfurt am Main it runs the Linienbündel A package of city bus lines with a fleet of around 65 buses, including standard, small, midi and articulated vehicles. From 1 January 2016 Alpina took over the municipal bus services in Bad Homburg and Oberursel, and from 11 December 2016 it added the town service in Friedrichsdorf and three lines in the Offenbach district. The operating company, Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH, today employs around 350 qualified staff, about 300 of them in driving service, and maintains depots in Frankfurt-Kalbach, Bad Homburg and Seligenstadt. Alpina's parent, Transdev, describes itself as Germany's largest private mobility provider, carrying around 200 million passengers a year with roughly 9,000 employees across 57 active subsidiaries. Transdev Deutschland is part of the international Transdev group headquartered in Paris, which operates on five continents in 19 countries with 107,000 employees and is owned by the family-owned RETHMANN group and the Caisse des Dépôts. Within this structure, Alpina functions as a regional brand for bus-based public transport in the Frankfurt/Rhein-Main area, combining a long local tradition with the scale and standards of a global mobility company.
