Overview

Alpacka Raft is a packraft brand founded in the fall of 2000 by Sheri Tingey and her son Thor Tingey, following Thor's 600-mile packrafting traverse of Alaska's Brooks Range. Each Alpacka Raft is handmade to order in the company's workshop at the base of the San Juan Mountains, with custom boats cut and built in its Mancos, Colorado factory. The brand offers packrafts for flatwater, lightwater, whitewater, and float hunting, and provides packrafting how-to education and conservation efforts.

History

Alpacka Raft was born in 2000 through a collaboration between Sheri Tingey, the designer behind the company's products, and her son Thor, who had just completed a 600-mile packrafting traverse of Alaska's Brooks Range and had ideas for a better-performing packraft. Sheri's background included founding 'Design by Sheri,' a custom ski clothing shop, in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and she was an avid kayaker. The family moved to Denali Park, Alaska in 1981. In the late 1990s the Tingeys met Roman Dial, an Alaska adventurer and early packraft adopter. Thor started college at Colorado College in 1996.
