Aloka Co., Ltd.

Aloka Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company engaged in the design, manufacture, sale, and maintenance of radiation measurement instruments. Its corporate history traces back to 1950, when the medical equipment and special tube divisions of Japan Radio Co., Ltd. became independent as 'Medical Science Research Institute Co., Ltd.' The company adopted the name Aloka Co., Ltd. in 1976, and after a period under Hitachi-related names, it returned to the Aloka Co., Ltd. name in January 2024. Its head office is in Musashino, Tokyo, and it describes itself as a specialized manufacturer of radiation measurement devices, with products including survey meters, personal dosimeters, radiation monitoring systems, and radioactivity measurement equipment.

The company's origins date to 1950, when the medical equipment and special tube divisions of Japan Radio Co., Ltd. became independent as 'Medical Science Research Institute Co., Ltd.' and the trademark 'Aroka' was registered. In 1954 it established a radiation measurement instrument division and commercialized the GM tube measurement device DC-1. It was renamed 'Japan Radio Medical Science Research Institute Co., Ltd.' in 1958, and in 1976 changed its name to 'Aloka Co., Ltd.' In 2011, following a tender offer by Hitachi Medical Corporation, it became a wholly owned subsidiary and was renamed 'Hitachi Aloka Medical, Ltd.' In 2016, divisions other than manufacturing were split off and succeeded by Hitachi, Ltd., while the manufacturing division was absorbed by Hitachi Healthcare Manufacturing, Ltd.; the radiation measurement business continued within Hitachi, Ltd.'s Healthcare Business Unit Analytical Systems Division. In 2018 the maintenance division transferred to Hitachi Healthcare Systems, Ltd. In 2020, Hitachi Healthcare Manufacturing, Ltd. merged in, and the maintenance division for analytical systems joined from Hitachi Healthcare Systems, Ltd. In June 2022, Hitachi, Ltd. transferred the radiation measurement business to a new company named Japan Raytech Co., Ltd., which commenced operations. In January 2024, the company name was changed to 'Aloka Co., Ltd.'
