Overview
Almatyelektrotrans (also referred to as «Алматыэлектрокөлік») is a transport company in Kazakhstan that provides public transport services to residents and guests of Almaty. Its history traces back to 1937, when the Almaty tram-trolleybus administration (АТТБ) was established and the first tram service opened on 7 November 1937. The first trolleybus line followed in 1944. In 1998, by decision of the city akim, the municipal state enterprise «Алматыэлектрокөлік» was created on the basis of АТТБ, with the city akimat as founder. The enterprise was reorganized in 2007, began operating bus routes in addition to electric transport in 2011, and was reorganized into a limited liability partnership in 2013. Tram operations ceased in 2015, and from 11 January 2016 the «ОНАЙ» electronic payment system was introduced. In 2023–2024 the trolleybus fleet was substantially renewed with 212 new trolleybuses. In 2026 the company plans to add the modern Avtobys payment system to its fleet. The company's office is located in Almaty at Auezov Street 64.
History
The enterprise's history begins in 1937 with the establishment of the Almaty tram-trolleybus administration (АТТБ); on 7 November 1937 the first tram service opened in Almaty. In 1944 the first trolleybus line was launched, marking the start of environmentally clean electric transport in the city. In 1998, by decision of the city akim, the municipal state enterprise «Алматыэлектрокөлік» was created on the basis of АТТБ, with the city akimat as founder. In 2007 the enterprise was reorganized into a municipal state enterprise with the right of economic management (ШЖҚ КМК) of the Almaty city akimat. In 2011, in addition to electric transport, it began passenger transport by bus routes. In 2013, by akimat decree, the enterprise was reorganized into a modern organizational-legal form — the limited liability partnership «Алматыэлектрокөлік». In 2015 tram line operations were stopped. From 11 January 2016 the «ОНАЙ» electronic payment system was introduced, transitioning city transport mainly to cashless payments. In 2023–2024 there was a large-scale renewal of the trolleybus fleet: 212 new trolleybuses were purchased, fully renewing the rolling stock with modern, warm and environmentally clean vehicles. In 2026 the company plans a new step in digitalizing transport infrastructure: the modern Avtobys payment system will be added to the enterprise's fleet, expanding payment options for passengers.
