Overview
The Almagellerhütte is a mountain hut owned by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), Section Niesen, located in the Wysstal valley below the Dri Horlini in the Valais Alps of Switzerland. The nearest valley settlement is Saas-Almagell. Built in 1984, it is the youngest SAC hut that was not a replacement for an older structure. The hut sits on the south side of the Weissmies and serves as a starting point for alpine, climbing, and hiking tours, as well as a destination for day visitors. It is best known as the base for the popular glacier-free ascent of the Weissmies via the Zwischbergenpass (3,268 m) and the Weissmies south ridge. The hut has been run by the Anthamatten family since 1984; Hugo and Karin Anthamatten managed it for 41 years, and since summer 2025 their son Gabriel and his wife Vanessa have taken over. The hut offers overnight accommodation and meals during the summer season, and a shelter is available outside the season for emergencies. The Almagellerhütte is a commercial hospitality operation within the SAC hut network, providing accommodation, food, and guiding information to mountaineers and hikers.
History
The Almagellerhütte was built between 1982 and 1984, with construction starting on June 2, 1984, and the inauguration taking place on July 7–8, 1984. It is the youngest hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) that was not built as a replacement for an older hut. The hut is owned by the SAC Section Niesen and is located in the Wysstal valley below the Dri Horlini in the Valais Alps, above the village of Saas-Almagell. Since its opening, the hut has been run by the Anthamatten family: Hugo and Karin Anthamatten managed it for 41 years. In 2006/07, the hut underwent renovation and extension, with an inauguration ceremony for the extension on September 9, 2007. In 2014, an anniversary book titled “Almagellerhütte 1984 – 2014” by Dr. Donat Jäger was published, documenting the detailed history of the hut. In summer 2025, Gabriel and Vanessa Anthamatten, the son and daughter-in-law of Hugo and Karin, took over the running of the hut. The Almagellerhütte remains a key base for mountaineers, particularly for the glacier-free ascent of the Weissmies via the Zwischbergenpass and the south ridge.
