Overview
Allured Business Media is a privately held American business-to-business media company based in Carol Stream, Illinois. Its roots extend to 1921, when Earl R. Allured established The Manufacturing Confectioner, a technical magazine serving the confectionery industry. The enterprise developed as a family publishing business and later became particularly associated with professional information for cosmetics, toiletries, fragrance, flavor, esthetics and spa businesses. After Earl Allured died in 1931, his wife, Prudence M. Walker Allured, assumed responsibility for the company. She maintained and expanded the publication during the Depression and subsequent decades, building an international readership and an advertising-supported technical publishing operation. Her leadership was notable within the American trade-press community: she held senior positions in professional publishing organizations and became a prominent woman in the confectionery publishing field. The family business expanded when Prudence's sons Stan, Jim and Al joined during 1949 and 1950. In 1960, the company acquired The American Perfumer, a move that substantially enlarged the operation and led to the creation of Allured Publishing Corporation. The acquired title evolved as its editorial focus broadened from essential oils and perfumery toward cosmetic-product technology. It was subsequently divided into distinct specialist publications because cosmetics and perfumery increasingly required different technical and commercial audiences. Cosmetics & Toiletries and Perfumer & Flavorist emerged as the company's principal specialist magazines in the 1970s. The portfolio then broadened further. Skin Inc. was launched in 1988 for the professional skin-care, salon and spa market, with related events including Face & Body trade shows. The company also developed scientific and reference publishing, including the Journal of Essential Oil Research and, later, the Allured Books division, which publishes specialized materials in cosmetic chemistry, flavor chemistry, fragrance creation and spa business and wellness. In late 2001, Allured Publishing acquired Global Cosmetic Industry from Advanstar; Allured's first issue under the new ownership appeared in February 2002. This brought another established cosmetics-industry media property into the family portfolio and expanded the company's presence across print and digital formats. In 2007, book publishing was separated from the magazine brands and organized as the Allured Books Division. In 2008, Allured Publishing Corporation adopted the name Allured Business Media, reflecting a broader portfolio of media, digital, events and specialist information products. The company remains a focused trade publisher rather than a mass-market consumer-media group. Its business model centers on technical and professional editorial content, industry advertising, digital publications, newsletters, books, events and specialized information services. Its audience includes cosmetic scientists, formulators, fragrance and flavor professionals, manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, salon and spa operators, estheticians and other business decision-makers. The Allured family's long-term ownership and the continuity of its specialist titles are central features of the brand's identity.
History
Allured Business Media traces its origins to The Manufacturing Confectioner, founded by Earl R. Allured in 1921. The publication began as a technical magazine for the confectionery trade and developed an international readership. When Earl died in 1931, Prudence M. Walker Allured took charge. She managed the business for approximately eighteen years, expanding its editorial and advertising reach while becoming an influential figure in American business publishing. The next generation entered the company after the Second World War. Stan, Jim and Allen Allured joined in 1949 and 1950. In March 1960, the family purchased The American Perfumer, doubling the size of the operation and prompting the formation of Allured Publishing Corporation. The perfumery title's editorial remit changed over time as the industry moved from a narrow essential-oils focus toward cosmetic formulation and product technology. Its title evolved through American Cosmetics & Perfumery before becoming part of the separate Cosmetics & Toiletries and Perfumer & Flavorist publishing structure. The two specialist magazines were separated in 1975–1976 because cosmetics and perfumery had become distinct industries with different technical communities and commercial needs. In 1976, Allen became sole owner of The Manufacturing Confectioner Publishing Company, while Stanley became sole owner of Allured Publishing Corporation. The cosmetics and fragrance portfolio continued to expand under Stanley and later generations of the family. Skin Inc. was launched in 1988 to serve estheticians and the professional salon and spa market. Its related activities later included Face & Body events in Northern California and Chicago. The company also added scientific publishing, including the Journal of Essential Oil Research as a companion to Perfumer & Flavorist. In late 2001, Allured acquired Global Cosmetic Industry from Advanstar; the first Allured-produced issue was published in February 2002, and the title subsequently operated in both print and digital formats. In 2007, Allured moved book publishing out of the magazine brands and created the Allured Books division. The division's subject areas include cosmetic chemistry, flavor chemistry, fragrance creation and spa business and wellness. In 2008, the corporate name changed from Allured Publishing Corporation to Allured Business Media. The new name reflected a wider mix of magazines, websites, newsletters, books and professional events. The business continues as a family-owned specialist media company focused on technical and trade information for international cosmetics, fragrance, flavor, spa and wellness communities.
