Overview

The Alliance Université-Entreprise de Grenoble (AUEG) is a French non-profit association and think tank based in the Grenoble metropolitan area. Founded on 21 June 1947 by Paul-Louis Merlin as the "association des amis de l'université de Grenoble," it was renamed "alliance universitaire de Grenoble" (AUG) in 1971 and took its current name, "alliance Université-Entreprise de Grenoble" (AUEG), in 2001. The organization describes itself as apolitical and non-denominational, and its stated purpose is to foster exchanges between the academic world and the economic and cultural environment at regional, national, and international levels. AUEG operates as a light, open, and independent structure. Its activities are organized around four strategic orientations: contributing to innovation and anticipation; fostering value creation by connecting research laboratories with businesses; promoting and helping to evolve higher education; and developing international links between culture, university, and enterprise, with a particular focus on Russia and Central Asia. The association runs thematic reflection groups, conferences, and round tables, and produces a range of publications for its members, partners, and the wider public. Its publications include AUEG Infos, a semiannual newsletter; the Dossiers de l'AUEG, debate-oriented leaflets; the Publications de l'AUEG, in-depth contributions; reports from contracted studies and reflection groups; and guides and tools intended for practical use by companies, laboratories, educational institutions, and local authorities. The organization is recognized as being of general interest by the French tax administration, allowing it to issue tax receipts that entitle individual donors to a 66% tax reduction and corporate donors to a 60% reduction. AUEG is headquartered at 17 avenue du Vercors in Seyssinet-Pariset, near Grenoble, and is led by Laurent Coussedière. It plans to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2027.

History

The Alliance Université-Entreprise de Grenoble was founded on 21 June 1947 by Paul-Louis Merlin as a French non-profit association under the law of 1901, initially named "association des amis de l'université de Grenoble" (Association of Friends of the University of Grenoble). In the post-war period, the relationship between universities and businesses was beginning to strengthen in wealthy countries, including France, amid a more liberal economic context. Reflecting this shift, the organization changed its name to "alliance universitaire de Grenoble" (AUG) by decision of an extraordinary general assembly on 8 November 1971. Three decades later, on 30 May 2001, another extraordinary general assembly adopted the current name, "alliance Université-Entreprise de Grenoble" (AUEG), explicitly signaling its mission to bridge academia and industry. Throughout its history, AUEG has positioned itself as an apolitical and non-denominational structure. It has operated as a light, open, and independent organization whose work is structured around four strategic orientations: contributing to innovation and anticipation; fostering value creation by connecting research and enterprise; promoting and helping to evolve higher education; and developing international links between culture, university, and enterprise. Its international focus has included notable engagement with China and, more recently, with Eastern European countries, particularly Russia and Central Asia. AUEG has produced a continuous stream of publications since at least the 2000s, including the semiannual AUEG Infos newsletter, the Dossiers de l'AUEG debate leaflets, in-depth Publications de l'AUEG, reports, and practical guides and tools. The organization has also hosted numerous conferences and round tables, some of which have been recorded and made available. In the 2020s, AUEG received recognition as an organism of general interest from the French tax administration, enabling it to issue tax receipts for donations. As of 2026, the association is preparing to celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2027, while redefining its project scopes and lowering membership fees for individual members to broaden its network, especially among younger generations.
