Overview

The Alliance Française Lublin (Alliance française de Lublin) is a non-profit French language school and cultural centre based in Lublin, Poland. It is part of the worldwide Alliance Française network, which has over 140 years of experience in teaching French and promoting Francophone cultures. The Lublin branch was officially established on 16 January 1984, following the launch of a French centre in October 1983, largely through the efforts of Patrick Dahlet, then a lecturer at the Department of French Studies of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS). It was the sixth Alliance Française to be founded in Poland. The organisation offers French courses for all ages and levels, from beginner (A0) to advanced (C1), including specialised courses for children from age 5, teenagers, adults, and seniors (60+). It also provides conversation classes and preparation for internationally recognised French exams such as DELF, DALF, TEF, and DFP. In addition to language teaching, the Alliance Française Lublin organises Francophone cultural events, maintains a library, and rents out rooms. It is the only specialised French language school in Lublin. Initially housed in the Ikar student residence, the Alliance moved on 1 October 1991 to a building on Litewski Square, with support from the French Embassy. Since 2007, its activities have been managed by the non-profit association Lubelskie Stowarzyszenie Alliance Française Lublin (KRS 0000277029), whose statutes were filed on 23 March 2007. The association is led by Kazimierz Jan Deryło, with Wojciech Goleman as president of the board and Andrzej Pleszczyński and Małgorzata Willaume as vice-presidents. The Alliance Française Lublin regularly organises the national methodological seminar of the Alliance Française in Poland, held in Lublin and Kazimierz Dolny, and co-organises the national French language competition and regional stages of a poetry and prose competition. It serves as a key institution for French language education and Francophone culture in the Lublin region.

History

The Alliance Française Lublin was officially created on 16 January 1984, following the establishment of a French centre that began its activities in October 1983. The initiative was led by Patrick Dahlet, then a lecturer at the Department of French Studies of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin. It was the sixth Alliance Française to be founded in Poland within the global Alliance Française network. Its creation was formalised by the signatures of Józef Szymański, rector of UMCS; Zdzisław Ryłko, secretary general of the Polish Committee for Cooperation with the Alliance Française (Polski Komitet Współpracy z Alliance Française); and the French ambassador to Poland. Initially, the Alliance Française was housed in the premises of the Ikar student residence. On 1 October 1991, it moved to a building located on Litewski Square, with the help of the French Embassy, which provided a subsidy for renovation works. From 2007, its activities were gradually transferred from the university to the non-profit association Lubelskie Stowarzyszenie Alliance Française Lublin (KRS 0000277029), whose statutes were filed on 23 March 2007. The association is directed by Kazimierz Jan Deryło. The board includes President Wojciech Goleman and Vice-Presidents Andrzej Pleszczyński and Małgorzata Willaume. The Alliance Française Lublin is the only specialised school for teaching French in Lublin. It regularly organises the national methodological seminar of the Alliance Française in Poland, held in Lublin and Kazimierz Dolny. It also co-organises the national French language competition and the regional stages of a poetry and prose competition.
