Overview
Alliance française Bohême du Sud (also known as Alliance Française Jižní Čechy) is the local branch of the international Alliance Française network serving the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Based in České Budějovice, it has provided French-language teaching in the city since 2004. It is part of a global network of more than 800 centres in 132 countries with over 500,000 students, and of the Czech network of six Alliances françaises (Brno, České Budějovice, Liberec, Ostrava, Pardubice and Plzeň). The branch offers a broad range of French courses for children, teenagers, adults and seniors, from complete beginner to advanced level. Its programme includes general French, conversation classes, grammar, French for travel, and preparation courses for the DELF/DALF examinations. It also organises cultural events such as the Nuit de la littérature, a ciné-club, and French-style café gatherings, and it participates in the wider Czech network's cultural calendar (European Day of Languages, Semaine du goût, the French Autumn festival, and International Francophonie Days). As a Czech association, it operates under Czech law while being affiliated with the Fondation Alliance française in Paris. Its mission is to spread the French language and Francophone cultures and to foster cultural exchange in South Bohemia.
History
The Alliance française movement in the Czech lands dates back to 1886, when the first Alliance française in Central Europe was founded in Prague; within a year it had 254 members, including Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk. By 1938, 77 sections were active across Czechoslovakia, but the network was dismantled after the Nazi invasion and disappeared completely in the early 1950s under communist rule. After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the network was revived with support from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Czech and Slovak local authorities. Today there are six Alliances françaises in the Czech Republic, in Brno, České Budějovice, Liberec, Ostrava, Pardubice and Plzeň. The Alliance française de Bohême du Sud in České Budějovice was established in 2004, according to its official website, which states that it has provided French-language teaching in the city since that year. It is a Czech association (described in French Wikipedia as a Czech for-profit association, though its mission is educational and cultural) affiliated with the global Alliance Française network. The network comprises more than 800 centres in 132 countries with over 500,000 students. The branch is part of the Czech network coordinated by a general coordination body that facilitates communication between the local associations, the Fondation Alliance française in Paris, and French diplomatic services. Each Alliance remains autonomous, with decisions taken by its own board. The Czech Alliances cooperate with the French Institutes in Prague and Bratislava and with the cultural cooperation services of the French embassies. They are also among the nine DELF-DALF examination centres in the Czech Republic. Over the years, the Alliance française Bohême du Sud has developed a regular programme of language courses and cultural events. Its cultural activities have included participation in the Nuit de la littérature, a ciné-club, and French-style café meetings, alongside the network-wide events such as the European Day of Languages, Semaine du goût, the French Autumn festival, and the International Francophonie Days.
