Allgemeiner Deutscher Nachrichtendienst

Allgemeiner Deutscher Nachrichtendienst, commonly abbreviated as ADN, was the state news agency of the German Democratic Republic. Founded in 1946 and based in East Berlin, it gathered, edited and distributed domestic and international news to East German newspapers, broadcasters and other institutional users. ADN occupied a central position in the GDR's state-controlled media system and also supplied news for international distribution. After German reunification, the GDR's media institutions were reorganized and ADN ceased to operate as an independent East German state news agency.

Allgemeiner Deutscher Nachrichtendienst was established in 1946 in the Soviet occupation zone and later became the state news agency of the German Democratic Republic. It supplied written and other media services to East German newspapers, radio and television organizations, and state institutions. Within the GDR's centralized media system, ADN covered domestic political, economic and social affairs, distributed international news, and helped communicate the official East German position abroad. Its institutional structure and editorial role were closely linked to the state, distinguishing it from a fully independent commercial wire service. Following German reunification, East Germany's media institutions were reorganized and ADN's state-news-agency role ended.
