Overview

Allessa is a chemical company based in Frankfurt am Main-Fechenheim, Germany. Founded in 2001 as AllessaChemie GmbH, it emerged when Clariant sold its Cassella-Offenbach operations, including the Fechenheim and Offenbach sites and three facilities at the Griesheim plant, to a group of former Hoechst managers. The company name AllessaChemie is an anagram of Cassella. Allessa GmbH specializes in contract manufacturing, process development, and the production of organic intermediates and specialty chemicals for industrial customers. Its facilities support production volumes ranging from hundreds of kilograms to several hundred tonnes per year, depending on the product. Its technology and plant capabilities also enable development of complex, multi-stage syntheses, including products made for a single customer. Additional services include drying, milling, mixing, analytical work for research, development, and quality assurance, as well as site services in Fechenheim. The company’s customers include businesses in agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of pigments, dyes, and auxiliaries, and companies in detergents, cosmetics, and oil production. Its locations have included Frankfurt-Fechenheim, Frankfurt-Griesheim, and Frankfurt-Höchst. The former Offenbach production unit was shut down in 2010; the Höchst site, added through a merger in 2012, has operated under the name WeylChem InnoTec since 2017. In 2013, ICIG acquired all shares in Allessa GmbH. Production activities were subsequently grouped in the newly established AllessaProduktion GmbH, and Allessa is assigned to the WeylChem Group within ICIG. History

Allessa’s corporate history begins in 2001, when Clariant sold its Cassella-Offenbach operations to a group of former Hoechst managers, who continued the business independently under the name AllessaChemie GmbH. The sold operations included the Fechenheim and Offenbach sites and three facilities at the Griesheim plant. The company name AllessaChemie is an anagram of Cassella. The industrial history of the locations predates Allessa. The Fechenheim site traces back to an aniline factory established in 1870 at Mainkur by the Frankfurt dye wholesaler Leopold Cassella & Comp. By around 1900, the business had become the world’s largest azo-dye factory. The later Cassella AG had its headquarters there; the site is now Allessa GmbH’s headquarters and is also operated as an industrial park. The company operates a production plant in the Griesheim industrial park, where Ludwig Baist established a chemical factory in 1856. The historic site has been operated by Infrasite Griesheim, a subsidiary of Infraserv Höchst, since 2009. In 2010, the last production plant at the former Offenbach works was shut down. In 2012, the Cassella brand was registered again and began operating independently of Allessa. On 1 December 2012, Allessa GmbH gained a third location in Frankfurt-Höchst through its merger with AllessaSyntec GmbH; that site has operated under the name WeylChem InnoTec since 2017. On 25 September 2013, International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG) reached an agreement with Cassella GmbH under which ICIG acquired all shares in Allessa GmbH. Following the acquisition, production activities were consolidated in the newly established AllessaProduktion GmbH. Within ICIG, Allessa was assigned to the WeylChem Group. In August 2019, operations of the catalytic reduction plant in Frankfurt-Griesheim were permanently closed.
