History
The historical roots of ATI reach back to Allegheny Steel and Ludlum Steel, which merged in 1939 to form Allegheny Ludlum Corporation. Before that combination, the predecessor companies had supplied steel for major construction projects and produced stainless-steel components for the automotive industry. Allegheny Ludlum later diversified. It acquired Wilkinson Sword and Scripto in 1978 and Kennedy Company in 1979, although some of these noncore holdings were subsequently sold. In 1986, the company recorded a substantial operating loss and its chairman, Robert Buckley, left amid criticism of management. Wilkinson Sword was sold in 1987, the same year Allegheny Ludlum became publicly traded under chief executive Dick Simmons. The company acquired Jessop Steel in 1993. In 1996, Allegheny Ludlum merged with Teledyne operations to create Allegheny Technologies. The new company later spun off Teledyne Technologies and Water Pik Technologies in 1999, reflecting a decision to concentrate on metals and alloys rather than maintain a broad portfolio of unrelated businesses. ATI expanded its specialty-materials platform through acquisitions and asset purchases. In 1998 it acquired selected Lukens Washington Steel assets, along with Teledyne Wah Chang Albany and Oregon Metallurgical Corporation. In 2012 it announced a major titanium-sponge investment in Rowley, Utah, using the Kroll process and locating the facility near a magnesium operation. ATI idled its Albany and Rowley facilities in 2016, citing weak demand in Albany and competitive pressure from other titanium-sponge suppliers in Rowley. It also announced the closure of its Frackville, Pennsylvania, facility. In 2019, the company sold its ATI Cast Products plant in Albany, Oregon. It announced closure of another Albany operation in 2020, and the Albany plant was closed in December 2022 according to the referenced account. Labor relations became a prominent issue in 2021, when United Steelworkers members at nine northern U.S. facilities went on strike over proposed health-care changes.
