Overview

Aljamahiriya TV (Arabic: قناة الجماهيرية) was the principal state television channel of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, operated by the General Radio and Television Corporation of Libya under the country's Ministry of Information. Its name derived from the neologism "Jamahiriya," coined by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to describe a state governed directly by the masses. The channel functioned as the official broadcasting arm of the Gaddafi government, carrying political debates, cultural programming, news bulletins, live sessions of the Popular Congress, speeches by the "Guide of the Revolution," and readings from Gaddafi's Green Book. Domestically, Aljamahiriya TV was distributed via Libya's terrestrial network, while its international service, the Jamahiriya Satellite Channel, reached audiences across the Arab world through Arabsat-Badr 6, and in North Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Europe via multiple satellites, including Hot Bird from 1997 to 2011. Until the late 2000s, broadcasts began in the morning and ended in the evening with Quranic recitations and the national anthem, followed by a test pattern and national radio; programming later moved to a 24-hour schedule. During the 2011 Libyan Civil War, the channel served as a government tribune. On 22 August 2011, as rebel forces of the National Transitional Council advanced on Tripoli, the station was stormed and ceased broadcasting around 16:00 that day. It briefly resumed propaganda broadcasts on 30 December 2011 via Egypt's Nilesat satellite, prompting threats from Abdallah Naker, head of the Tripoli rebel council, toward the Egyptian government. Nilesat officials denied permitting the transmission, and Aljamahiriya TV went off the air again. The channel is now defunct as a state broadcaster, though the website lj-bc.tv currently hosts Libyan news content under a related name.

History

Aljamahiriya TV was the main state television channel of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, managed by the General Radio and Television Corporation of Libya, a company dependent on the Ministry of Information of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. Its name referred to the neologism "Jamahiriya," an expression coined by Colonel Muammar Gaddafi translating the idea of a "state managed by the masses," officially direct democracy. The channel served as a government platform during the 2011 Libyan Civil War. On 22 August 2011, as rebels of the National Transitional Council launched their offensive on Tripoli, the station was stormed and ceased broadcasting the same day around 16:00. On 30 December 2011, Aljamahiriya TV resumed broadcasting Gaddafi-loyalist propaganda programs via the Nilesat satellite, owned by Egyptian authorities. Abdallah Naker, head of the Tripoli rebel council, immediately issued threats to the Egyptian government. Nilesat officials denied allowing the broadcast of this program, and Aljamahiriya TV ceased broadcasting again. In terms of programming, Aljamahiriya TV mainly aired debates, cultural programs, and news bulletins. A large place was given to official Libyan politics and government activities, with live broadcasts of sessions of the "Popular Congress," speeches by the "Guide of the Revolution" (the official function of Colonel Gaddafi), and readings from the Green Book, a work written by the Libyan leader and published in 1975. Until the late 2000s, programs began in the morning and ended in the evening with the reading of Quranic verses and the broadcast of the national anthem, before giving way to a test pattern and national radio. Programs were subsequently broadcast 24 hours a day. Aljamahiriya TV was broadcast on the Libyan terrestrial network as well as throughout the Arab world via the Arabsat-Badr 6 satellite. An international version of the Libyan state television, Jamahiriya Satellite Channel, was broadcast by satellite in North Africa, the Near and Middle East, and the Americas via several satellites. It was also broadcast in Europe via the Hot Bird satellite from 1997 to 2011.
