Overview
A.A.S.R. Skøll (Algemene Amsterdamse Studenten Roeivereniging Skøll) is a Dutch student rowing club based in Amsterdam. It was founded on 3 November 1966 as an alternative to ASR Nereus, which at the time required membership of the Amsterdam student corps. Skøll has grown into the largest student rowing club in the Netherlands and, after ASC/AVSV, the largest student association in Amsterdam. The club is open to students at universities and colleges in and around Amsterdam and has nearly 1,200 members. Skøll is both a recreational and competitive rowing club. It offers rowing for all levels, from beginners to elite athletes, and has a strong tradition in competitive rowing. The club's competitive rowers have won medals at World Championships and Olympic Games. Skøll members have represented the Netherlands at multiple Olympics, including 2000, 2004, 2012, 2016, 2021 and 2024. In 2024, Lennart van Lierop won gold in the men's quadruple sculls and Benthe Boonstra won gold in the women's four, the club's first Olympic gold medals. Skøll organises and co-organises several rowing events. The most important is the Koninklijke-Holland Beker (Royal Holland Beker), a two-day international rowing regatta. The club also organises the annual Skøll Cup, a two-day competition race that has been voted best competition race by the NOOC every year since 2006. The club's boathouse is located at Jan Vroegopsingel 6 in Amsterdam. Skøll celebrated its 60th anniversary (lustrum) in 2026, marking six decades of rowing tradition. The club remains active with a large membership, numerous committees, and a fleet of boats. It is a vibrant part of the Amsterdam student community and Dutch rowing landscape.
History
A.A.S.R. Skøll was founded on 3 November 1966 as a counterpart to ASR Nereus, which at the time required membership of the Amsterdam student corps. The club grew quickly, and by 1971 the need for its own boathouse and clubhouse led to the driving of the first pile for the University Boathouse on 22 February 1971, for which the university made 500,000 guilders available. In 1995, the university sold the boathouse to Skøll for one guilder. After 1974, Skøll was primarily strong in competition and club rowing. However, it was realised that the size and performance of a competitive rowing division are quite decisive for the club's external image and for activity within the club itself. At that time there were no more than 4 or 5 competitive rowers at Skøll. After the fourth lustrum, the club changed course. Efforts were made to raise the level of competitive rowing at Skøll. In July 1988, a policy plan for competitive rowing was presented with the goal of building a broader competitive division. The new approach meant that in 1989 Skøll could supply three freshman eights and a total of 35 competitive rowers. Members Leofwin Visman and Remko Schnieders won a bronze medal at the 1996 World Championships for the Holland Acht in the men's coxed pair, the first World Championship medals for the rowing club. Pieta van Dishoeck won the World Championships in the double sculls in 1998 together with rowing partner Eeke van Nes (Die Leythe). Pieta van Dishoeck rowed at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney with Eeke van Nes in the double sculls to a second place and also won a silver medal in the women's eight with coxswain. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Matthijs Vellenga won silver in the men's eight, and the women's eight including Hurnet Dekkers, Nienke Hommes, Annemiek de Haan and Marlies Smulders won bronze. Maarten Tromp and Wolter Blankert won a gold medal at the 2007 World Championships. Matthijs Vellenga won the World Cup standings in 2007 and 2008 with his team in the coxless four and thus qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing, where only a fourth place was achieved in the semi-finals. The women's eight with Annemiek de Haan and Marlies Smulders won silver. In both 2009 and 2010, Carline Bouw became world champion in the women's coxless four. Tycho and Vincent Muda, after bronze in 2008 and silver in 2009, took the gold medal in 2010 at the World Championships for seniors under 23. In 2012, seven members of Skøll participated in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Annemiek de Haan and Carline Bouw won a bronze medal in the women's eight. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Carline Bouw won silver in the quadruple sculls. Head coach Peter Wiersum won bronze as coxswain of the Holland Acht. During the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Jan van der Bij, Guillaume Krommenhoek, Bjorn van den Ende and Nika Vos participated in the rowing tournament. For the first time since 1996, no medals were won by members of Skøll during those Olympic Games. The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris were, by contrast, the most successful for both Skøll and the Netherlands. Lennart van Lierop and Benthe Boonstra won gold in the men's quadruple sculls and the women's coxless four respectively. Van Lierop thus gave Skøll its first Olympic gold in the club's history. Jan van der Bij and Olav Molenaar won a silver medal with the Holland Acht. Skøll organises and co-organises several events. The most important event that Skøll (co-)organises is the Koninklijke-Holland Beker. This is a two-day international rowing competition in the Netherlands. In addition, Skøll organises the annual Skøll Cup. This is a two-day competition race in which every competition number starts. Since 2006, the Skøll Cup has been chosen every year by the NOOC as the best competition race.
