Aldus Corporation

Aldus Corporation was an American software company founded in 1984 and focused on desktop publishing, page layout, and related graphics software. Founded by Paul Brainerd and based in Seattle, Washington, the company became best known for PageMaker, an application that enabled users to design, typeset, and produce pages on personal computers. PageMaker was an important early desktop-publishing product and helped extend page-production work beyond traditional professional typesetting environments as personal computers, graphical interfaces, and laser printers became more widely available. Aldus also developed or marketed graphics-oriented software, including FreeHand, and contributed to the growth of the desktop-publishing software ecosystem. Adobe Systems announced an acquisition of Aldus in 1994. After the acquisition, parts of Aldus's products and technology were incorporated into Adobe's product portfolio, and Aldus ceased operating as an independent company.
