Albert Schweitzer Foundation for Our Contemporaries

The Albert Schweitzer Foundation for Our Contemporaries (Albert Schweitzer Stiftung für unsere Mitwelt) is a foundation whose stated goal is a world in which no animal suffers for the production of food. It works to hold companies accountable, including for the protection of fish and other aquatic animals, and runs initiatives such as the Masthuhn-Initiative (broiler chicken initiative) that companies join to commit to higher animal-welfare standards. It describes its working culture as combining charitable engagement with entrepreneurial structures, a long-term strategy and clearly defined goals.

The foundation's website states that it celebrates 25 years of the Albert Schweitzer Stiftung, looking back on a successful quarter century while noting that much remains to be done. Its stated goal is a world in which no animal suffers for the production of food. It reports on a court ruling concerning turkey farming (Putenklage), stating that the court decided that conditions in turkey fattening violate animal-welfare law. It also publishes an aquaculture report examining what animal-welfare requirements supermarkets place on aquaculture products, and runs the Masthuhn-Initiative, which companies such as Menü 2000, 60 seconds to Napoli, Yorma's, Hit and Wasgau have joined.
