Overview

The Albert-Link-Hütte is a managed alpine hut (category II) of the Munich section of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV). It is situated at 1,053 metres above sea level in the Schliersee Mountains, part of the Mangfall range in the Bavarian Prealps, just south of Spitzingsee lake on the Valepper Alm. The hut is easily reached in about ten minutes from the village of Spitzingsee and serves as a base for the three-day "Drei-Seen-Tour" (Three Lakes Tour). It is particularly popular with families due to its child-friendly surroundings, which include meadows, a stream, and a large playground. The hut is open year-round, with Monday as its rest day (except public holidays). It offers over 60 sleeping places in cosy rooms and dormitories. The Albert-Link-Hütte is renowned well beyond the district for its homemade specialties made from predominantly regional ingredients, including wood-fired bread, game dishes, cakes, and smoked delicacies. It has held the environmental seal of the Alpine Clubs since 2022 for a further five years. The hut is named after Albert Link (1868–1944), a decorative painter who was a pioneer of skiing in the Munich section and founded its ski department in 1913. The current building was constructed in 1939–1940 and extensively renovated in 2014. The hut is operated by tenant Marcel Roth, with Veronika Filser as service manager.

History

The Albert-Link-Hütte traces its origins to the early 20th century, when skiing became a fashionable sport. In 1913, the Munich section of the German Alpine Club founded a ski department, led by Albert Link. The department organised ski courses and competitions, many in the Spitzing area. In 1919, the section leased the Valeppalm, a mountain hut built in 1739, as a base. The hut then had three habitable rooms with eight camp beds and 24 straw sacks. In 1929, the section purchased the Valeppalm. Due to the excellent skiing terrain, the hut was heavily visited and soon needed expansion. In 1939, a new mountain house in Alpine homeland style was built for 110,000 Reichsmarks, and it was inaugurated in 1940. It was named Albert-Link-Hütte in honour of Albert Link, who had served as hut warden for the Wetterstein area from 1916 to 1941 and was chairman of the ski department for 29 years until 1942. The hut became the cradle of the Munich section's ski department. Over the decades, various extensions and renovations were carried out. By the 2010s, a major renovation was necessary due to accumulated maintenance needs, lack of storage space, and requirements regarding fire protection, workplace regulations, and commercial law. The hut was comprehensively renovated in 2014, and it reopened in new splendour for its 75th anniversary. In 2022, it was awarded the environmental seal of the Alpine Clubs for another five years. Today, the hut is a popular destination for hikers, skiers, and families, offering homemade specialties and over 60 sleeping places.
