Overview
Alberdingk Boley GmbH is a medium-sized, family-owned German specialty chemicals company headquartered in Krefeld-Uerdingen. Its core business is the development, production and marketing of water-based polyurethane, acrylic and adhesive dispersions used in paints and varnishes, building protection, printing inks, wood coatings, corrosion protection and adhesives. A second pillar is natural oils as renewable raw materials: the company describes itself as Europe's only producer of castor oil, linseed oil varnish and their derivatives, which are supplied to the printing ink, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. The company also produces polyols, including 100% polyurethane polyols based on renewable resources marketed under the Albodur brand. The company traces its origins to 1772, when Hendrik Alberdingk bought a building and warehouse in Amsterdam and moved from cooperage into trading edible oils, fats and fish oil. The Boley family entered oil milling in 1828 with Franz Heinrich Boley's mill in St. Tönis near Krefeld. The two family businesses merged in 1921 as Alberdingk-Firnis and Ölwerke AG, and after further mergers the present limited-liability company Alberdingk Boley GmbH was formed in 1989. Modern dispersion production began in 1970 with acrylic dispersions, followed by polyurethane dispersions in 1985 and adhesive dispersions in 1998. Today Alberdingk Boley operates internationally with production sites in China and the United States and around 500 employees worldwide, more than a quarter of whom work in research and development. The company positions itself as innovative, sustainable and close to its customers, emphasizing environmentally friendly binders, biobased products and individual formulation development. It describes itself as an independent, globally operating mid-sized enterprise that has been a reliable partner for customers for 250 years.
History
The history of Alberdingk Boley spans more than 250 years and two founding families whose names form the company name. In 1772 Hendrik Alberdingk bought a building and warehouse in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Initially acting as a cooper, the company successfully transitioned into the trading of edible oils, fats and fish oil. In 1798 Frederik Alberdingk, the founder's son, bought mills in order to process seeds and spices. In 1828 Franz Heinrich Boley established the first oil mill in St. Tönis near Krefeld, Germany. Alberdingk & Sons merged to create the company "Alberdingk-Firnis" and "Ölwerke AG".
