Overview

Al Janoubia TV (Arabic: قناة الجنوبية, meaning "Channel of the South [of the Mediterranean]") is a private general-interest Tunisian television station. It was founded by Farhat Jouini and Rabii Baaboura and began experimental broadcasting in March 2012, timed to coincide with Tunisia's Independence Day. The ownership team was later strengthened by businessman and sports figure Ali Baaboura, and Kamel Ben Younes was appointed channel president in August of the same year. In August 2013, wealthy businessman and founder of the Tunisian Movement for Freedom and Dignity, Mohamed Ayachi Ajroudi, bought Al Janoubia TV. On 6 November, the channel's headquarters was closed and its equipment seized following a financial dispute between Jouini, who still owned the premises, and Ayachi Ajroudi. After Tunisia's Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication decided to suspend the broadcasting of television channels that had not obtained a license and to fine them 50,000 dinars, Al Janoubia TV stopped broadcasting from Tunisia and resumed from its Paris premises starting 1 October 2014. On 3 February 2015, the channel voluntarily suspended transmission while awaiting a broadcasting license. A license was finally granted on 20 April 2015. The channel operates as a general-interest broadcaster, offering a mix of programming typical of Tunisian private television, and maintains an official website at ar.aljanoubiyatv.net.
