Overview

Akademia Inżynierska w Polsce (AIP), known in English as the Polish Academy of Engineering, is a Polish association established in 1992 on the initiative of the Federacja Stowarzyszeń Naukowo-Technicznych NOT (Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations). It brings together outstanding creators of Polish technology, including engineers and entrepreneurs, and is dedicated to supporting the development of modern technologies, innovative entrepreneurship, and the transfer of technology into economic practice. The Academy also promotes technical culture in line with sustainable development strategies and works to raise the profile of Polish innovation both domestically and abroad. The Academy's mission is carried out through a range of activities: inspiring and participating in priority research, development, and application programmes at national and international levels; providing opinions, advice, and assessments for state, local government, economic, and social institutions and decision-makers; cooperating with academic and higher education institutions as well as secondary schools in teaching improvement; developing technoscience and technosophy and popularising this knowledge; promoting modern professional knowledge and civilisational achievements through all contemporary media; and collaborating with scientific and technical associations and their Federation (FSNT-NOT) as well as other socio-professional associations integrally linked to civilisational development. AIP has been a member of the Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., since 1998. CAETS coordinates the activities of 25 engineering academies and similar organisations from various countries. Since 2011, AIP has held the status of a public benefit organisation (organizacja pożytku publicznego). The Academy operates under a statute adopted at the General Assembly on 21 April 2017. As of April 2019, its president is Prof. Jerzy Barglik. The number of ordinary members is limited to 300. Membership is granted to individuals who have demonstrated recognised achievements constituting a creative intellectual or physical contribution to the development of engineering, technology, and environmental protection, or who have shown significant accomplishments in the education and training of technical staff and the popularisation of technology. The Academy awards the Gabriel Narutowicz Honorary Medals to persons particularly meritorious for Polish technical sciences. Laureates include Michał Kleiber and Władysław Bartoszewski. The Academy remains active, organising general assemblies, scientific symposia, technical webinars, and other events, as evidenced by recent activities in 2026.

History

Akademia Inżynierska w Polsce (AIP) was established in 1992 on the initiative of the Federacja Stowarzyszeń Naukowo-Technicznych NOT (Federation of Scientific and Technical Associations). It was created as an association to bring together the most distinguished creators of Polish technology—engineers and entrepreneurs—with the aim of supporting the development of modern technologies, innovative entrepreneurship, and the transfer of technology into economic practice. The Academy also sought to spread technical culture in line with sustainable development strategies and to promote Polish innovation both domestically and internationally. From its founding, AIP has pursued a mission that includes inspiring and participating in priority research, development, and application programmes at national and international levels; providing opinions, advice, and assessments for state, local government, economic, and social institutions and decision-makers; cooperating with academic and higher education institutions as well as secondary schools in teaching improvement; developing technoscience and technosophy and popularising this knowledge; promoting modern professional knowledge and civilisational achievements through all contemporary media; and collaborating with scientific and technical associations and their Federation (FSNT-NOT) as well as other socio-professional associations integrally linked to civilisational development. In 1998, AIP became a member of the Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., which coordinates the activities of 25 engineering academies and similar organisations from various countries. In 2011, the Academy obtained the status of a public benefit organisation (organizacja pożytku publicznego). It operates under a statute adopted at the General Assembly on 21 April 2017. AIP continues to be active, organising general assemblies, scientific symposia, technical webinars, and other events. Recent activities in 2026 include the 47th General Assembly and 6th Scientific Symposium in Białystok, a symposium in Katowice, and the 35th Technical Webinar. The Academy also recognises the achievements of its members, such as the honorary doctorate awarded to Prof. Teofil Jesionowski, President of AIP, by Bydgoszcz University of Science and Technology.
