Overview

AirTanker Services Limited is a privately held British aviation services company incorporated in England and Wales in 2007. It operates the AirTanker airline and provides aircraft operating, support and leasing services connected with the United Kingdom’s Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft programme. Its principal customer is the UK Ministry of Defence, for which the wider AirTanker arrangement supplies and operates fourteen Airbus A330-243 aircraft converted to Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport configuration. In Royal Air Force service, these aircraft are known as Voyager. The Voyager fleet gives the RAF a combined air-to-air refuelling and strategic air-transport capability. Depending on configuration, an aircraft can refuel probe-equipped combat aircraft, transport troops and cargo, and support aeromedical or other specialised missions. The aircraft replaced the RAF’s former Vickers VC10 and Lockheed TriStar tanker fleet and became the RAF’s sole tanker type. AirTanker Services supports this capability through aircraft operations, maintenance, engineering, operational management, training and the provision of some civilian personnel. RAF crews and engineers involved in the programme can include sponsored reservists employed by the company while serving in RAF roles. AirTanker is also licensed by the UK Civil Aviation Authority as a commercial airline. When aircraft are not required for military operations, the company can use reserve or demilitarised A330s for passenger charter, wet-lease and damp-lease work. This has included aircraft leased to Thomas Cook Airlines and Jet2.com for commercial holiday and passenger services. The company therefore combines defence aviation support with limited commercial airline and aircraft-leasing activity, rather than operating as a conventional scheduled passenger carrier. The company’s facilities at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire form the AirTanker Hub, which serves as the headquarters, registered-office location and main support centre for the fleet. AirTanker also established a civilian operating base at Manchester Airport to support commercial leasing operations. Its international military role has included the South Atlantic Air Bridge between RAF Brize Norton and RAF Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands, as well as tanker support for coalition operations over the Middle East. In 2022, the company received an engineering-support contract connected with the European Defence Agency’s Multinational MRTT Fleet. In June 2025, the UK Ministry of Defence announced a £170 million contract for the Voyager Operating System Evolution programme, covering the design, development, certification and through-life support of an updated mission system. AirTanker’s business remains closely tied to long-term government defence contracting and the operation of the Voyager fleet.

History

AirTanker Services Limited was incorporated in England and Wales in 2007 to operate the aviation-services element of the United Kingdom’s Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft programme. The programme was intended to replace the Royal Air Force’s ageing Vickers VC10 and Lockheed TriStar tanker fleet with a modern aircraft capable of both aerial refuelling and strategic air transport. In March 2008, the Ministry of Defence finalized its contract with AirTanker Holdings Limited, the legal owner of the aircraft, for fourteen Airbus A330-243 airframes converted to the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport standard. The aircraft were based at RAF Brize Norton, where a dedicated industry-owned complex known as the AirTanker Hub was constructed. The hub became the headquarters, registered-office location and principal support centre for AirTanker Services and AirTanker Holdings. The dual military and commercial structure required the aircraft to move between the UK Civil Aircraft Register and the Military Aircraft Register according to their operating role. AirTanker Services obtained a UK Civil Aviation Authority Type A Global operating licence, allowing it to carry passengers, cargo and mail on aircraft configured with at least twenty seats when performing commercial work. The first RAF Voyager operational activity began in May 2012, when sponsored reservists associated with No. 10 Squadron operated a military transport sortie from Brize Norton to RAF Akrotiri. AirTanker’s first charter flight followed in January 2013. After delays associated with certification of the refuelling-drogue equipment, the first operational aerial-refuelling flight took place on 20 May 2013. Later in 2013, No. 101 Squadron retired its remaining VC10 aircraft and became the second RAF squadron to operate Voyager. The type consequently became the RAF’s sole tanker aircraft. From October 2013, AirTanker operated the South Atlantic Air Bridge between Brize Norton and RAF Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands. The service primarily transports military personnel, contractors and freight, while also making seats available to civilian passengers. It normally uses Ascension Island as a refuelling stop. When the Ascension runway was unavailable during the 2019–2023 period, alternative stops included Cape Verde and Dakar before the route returned to Ascension after runway repairs. The Voyager fleet also acquired an expeditionary role. From late 2014, aircraft supported Operation Shader from No. 903 Expeditionary Air Wing at RAF Akrotiri by refuelling RAF Eurofighter Typhoons and other compatible coalition aircraft. In parallel, AirTanker developed its commercial activity. Demodified and demilitarised A330s were made available for charter and wet- or damp-lease work. One aircraft was leased to Thomas Cook Airlines in 2015, a second followed in 2017, and an aircraft was subsequently leased to Jet2.com. AirTanker established a Manchester Airport operating base in 2017 to support this civilian activity. A Voyager aircraft, ZZ336, received a VIP passenger configuration in 2016 for use by members of the British royal family, the Prime Minister and senior government officials. It retained its tanker and military-transport functions while receiving enhanced communications and security features. Following a mid-life upgrade in 2020, it was repainted in a white “Global Britain” scheme and given the RAF name Vespina. AirTanker expanded its engineering role in 2022 through a contract supporting the European Defence Agency’s Multinational MRTT Fleet. The work was divided with Airbus and included Rolls-Royce Trent engine support, Cobham refuelling-pod support and maintenance services. In June 2025, the Ministry of Defence announced the Voyager Operating System Evolution contract, valued at £170 million, for a new mission system and related certification and long-term support. The award reinforced AirTanker’s continuing role as an integrated operator and sustainment partner for the RAF tanker fleet.
